Melbourne Cellar Door
The co-owner, Mark Pendreich, does the buying himself, and the list he has built runs past 500 wines drawn from small, independent, family-owned producers. That is the venue's own account of itself, and it is the only account anyone has published.
Why go
South Wharf is a convention precinct, and the venues in it are mostly built for volume. This one makes a different claim: a deep list bought from growers rather than assembled from distributor lists, with a named person responsible for it. If you are working the convention centre and want a glass of something you cannot get elsewhere on that walk, this is the room to ask in. Full dining rather than snacks, closed Monday and Tuesday, open until 11pm on Friday and Saturday. Duke's Distillery branding sits on the venue's page, and nothing on that page explains what the relationship is.
Order this / avoid
- Order: ask whoever is pouring for a producer you have not heard of, which is what a list built this way is for.
- Avoid: Monday and Tuesday, when it is closed. And do not go expecting a distillery experience; the gin connection is a logo, not a documented cellar door.
What locals & experts say
- Nobody. Broadsheet, Time Out Melbourne, Concrete Playground and the wine specialists were checked on 1 August 2026 and none of them covers this venue. For a room claiming a 500-bottle list, that silence is the most notable thing about it.
- The venue's own claim, recorded as a claim:
over 500 wines on offer
fromsmall, independent, family-owned producers
, curated by co-owner Mark Pendreich.1 - On the Duke's connection: the venue's site carries Duke's Distillery branding and states no ownership, licence or supply arrangement, so nothing here treats it as a distillery cellar door.
Good to know
- Where: South Wharf. No street number is published, so follow a map pin to the door.
- Near MCEC: yes, walkable from the convention floor.
- Timing: Wednesday and Thursday noon to 9pm, Friday and Saturday noon to 11pm, Sunday noon to 9pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
- Booking: taken by phone or online, and worth making.
- Safety: Victoria publishes no per-venue hygiene rating. Safe Food Victoria's register of court convictions under the Food Act 1984 was read in full on 1 August 2026 and does not list this venue.2

- Note: Top pick near convention center
Verdict
could-visit — A wine room on the wharf, walking distance from the convention centre, whose one real selling point is a list its co-owner Mark Pendreich says runs past 500 bottles and is built on small, independent, family-owned producers rather than on distributor allocations. If that is accurate it is a serious list for the neighbourhood, and it is worth asking whoever is pouring to take you somewhere you would not go yourself. The caution is that the venue is the only source for any of it. Nobody independent has written about this room, not Broadsheet, not Time Out, not the wine press, which is odd for a list that size. And the promise of a Duke's Distillery cellar door pouring estate gin is not something the venue's own site says anywhere; there is a logo and no explanation. Closed Monday and Tuesday, dining rather than snacks, and open to 11 on Friday and Saturday.
