Saving Grace
Six taps, rotated seasonally, running through Melbourne brewers like Fixation, Hop Nation and Two Bays.
Why go
This is a dive bar down a CBD laneway, and the honest reason to walk into it is the beer (Concrete Playground). Six seasonal taps turn over through local craft brewers with lagers from further afield alongside, which is the difference between a bar someone is paying attention to and a bar with a fridge. The cocktails are classics with a house twist rather than a designed programme: a marmalade whisky sour on bourbon with lemon bitters and lemon sugar, a spiced rum old fashioned on Caribbean rum infused with orange rind, star anise and vanilla bean, and a frozen slushy whose flavor changes night to night. Burger Boys runs the kitchen in the back and keeps serving burgers and fried chicken late. It opens at noon six days a week, which in the CBD is worth more than it sounds.
Order this / avoid
- Order: ask what came on the taps this week and start there. The marmalade whisky sour if you want the drink they are known for. Ask the staff what the slushy is. Burgers from the back if you are staying.
- Avoid: Sunday, when it is shut. And do not come looking for back-bar depth; the movement here is on the beer, not the spirits.
What locals & experts say
- Orlaith Costello, Concrete Playground: "Tucked down Church Lane is Saving Grace, your friendly neighbourhood dive bar home to good brews, classic cocktails and banging burgers." The page carries no date, and this is a directory write-up rather than a visit-based verdict. ref
- The same piece, on the taps: it "rotates six seasonal taps with a lineup of largely local craft breweries on the list from the likes of Fixation, Hop Nation, Two Bays". ref
- The gap, stated plainly. Broadsheet has never covered this bar, no critic has reviewed it, no Melbourne chef names it across 74 industry picks, and the year it opened could not be established. A story circulating on directory sites about the name coming from a cathedral moved brick by brick off this site was found on no source this project accepts, so it is left out.
Good to know
- Where: 32 Church Lane, in the CBD, about 15 minutes' walk from MCEC.
- Timing: Monday to Wednesday and Saturday noon to 10pm, Thursday and Friday noon to midnight, closed Sunday.
- Booking: walk in, though tables can be reserved.
- Food: Burger Boys runs the kitchen, so eating here is a separate operator's cooking rather than the bar's.
- Hygiene: Victoria publishes no consumer-facing food-hygiene rating, so there is no Australian equivalent of an FSA score to record.
Jeff's take (his words)
Nothing. Melbourne has no _src saved-places export in this repo, so no Jeff note stands behind this row. The master CSV called it a hidden laneway cocktail den, which overstates what the sources describe, and that framing is not repeated above.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
could-visit — Six taps, turned over seasonally, leaning on Melbourne brewers: Fixation, Hop Nation, Two Bays. That rotation is the only craft claim this room actually supports and it is a real one, which is why it ranks above a bar with three unchanging handpumps. The cocktails are classics with a twist rather than a programme, the best of them a marmalade whisky sour on bourbon with lemon bitters and lemon sugar, and there is a frozen slushy whose flavour changes nightly. Burger Boys runs the kitchen in the back, so you can eat properly without leaving. It opens at noon six days a week, runs to midnight Thursday and Friday, and shuts Sunday, which makes it a useful CBD answer close to MCEC. It sits at could-visit because nobody with a byline has published a verdict on it, no Melbourne chef names it, and its opening year could not be established at all.
