Why go
Almost everything in it is recycled industrial material, with red lanterns and street art doing the warmth (Broadsheet). The carpark came with a peach tree that fruited, and for a couple of seasons the bar made daiquiris out of it (Beat). Salt is straightforward about what the place is for, and it is not the drinks list. The music programme is the constant, from long-running nights like Condensed Milk to the twentieth-birthday bill in March 2026 that ran hip hop, soul, house and disco through one Friday afternoon. Melbourne exported the idea of drinking in a laneway.

Verdict
should-visit — Rearrange an afternoon, and bring almost no money. In March 2006 Maz Salt took a one-year lease on a carpark off Tattersalls Lane, cut a hole in the side of a shipping container, stacked pallets for seats and opened a bar. Twenty years later it is still there, and Beat's feature headline calls it one of Melbourne's most important venues. Salt's own account of the purpose is worth the trip on its own: to listen to music, share space and have as much fun as humanly possible. The drink is honest rather than crafted, a list of imported beers and some house cocktails, and that is stated plainly here because food and drink quality is what the ranking weighs first. What lifts it anyway is the format and the price. This is a $ room in a Chinatown carpark that has outlasted almost every bar that opened after it, and it is the clearest thing Melbourne has to the laneway idea it exported. Come on a warm Friday and go somewhere indoors if it rains.
