Siglo
Siglo is Spanish for century and it is also the name of a Cohiba, which tells you what the terrace was built around: a humidor, a view of Parliament, and a licence that runs to three in the morning.
Why go
The terrace was commissioned in 2007 above The Melbourne Supper Club, up a wraparound timber staircase, and it looks out over Spring Street to Parliament House, the spire of St Patrick's and the domes of the Princess Theatre (Siglo). Service is at white-clothed tables in Parisian wicker chairs, the list runs classic cocktails, spirits and champagne, and the cigars are Cuban. Broadsheet is blunt about the trade: "It's not Melbourne's cheapest place for a drink, but you get what you pay for" (Broadsheet). The operator is Con Christopoulos, whose Melbourne portfolio also holds The European, City Wine Shop and Kafeneion, so this is a group room rather than a bartender's own bet.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Grand Gunner, built on two rums with fig and cinnamon bitters, nutmeg syrup and egg white. A cigar off the humidor. Then go inside to the bar, where the party pies, the chevap sausage roll and the spanakopita live.
- Avoid: the early evening if you want the rail. The food on the terrace is olives and chips, so eat downstairs or at City Wine Shop.
What locals & experts say
- Rebecca Russo, Time Out Melbourne (2021): "Getting a seat with a view is like an Olympic event, so we suggest making a pitstop post midnight when the after work crowd have long gone, theatre goers have heeded the final call and it's just you and the night owls looking out over Spring Street's canopy." She calls the bar "a master multitasker that is very eager to please." Unstarred, so there is no rating to carry with it. ref
- Broadsheet on the cigars: "the humidor is a sight to behold." ref
- No award, anywhere. World's 50 Best Bars, the Australian Bar Awards and Time Out Melbourne's own cocktail-bar nominee lists for 2022, 2023 and 2025 were checked on 1 August 2026 and Siglo appears in none of them.
- The chef-hangout reputation does not check out. None of the 74 chef and industry picks in Melbourne's vote corpus names Siglo. The nearby industry mentions are about the Melbourne Supper Club downstairs, which is a different premises with a different bar.
Good to know
- Where: 161 Spring St, up the stairs at the back of The Melbourne Supper Club. This row is the rooftop terrace, not the club below it.
- Timing: 5pm to 3am, daily. The seats with the view free up after midnight.
- Booking: walk-in.
- Food safety: no entry for this business on Safe Food Victoria's register of convictions as at its 21 July 2026 update. ref
- Near MCEC: no. Top of Collins and Spring, about 2.5km from South Wharf.
- If you want the drinks instead of the view: Caretaker's Cottage, ten minutes away, is the city's award-winning martini room.
Jeff's take (his words)
None. Melbourne has no raw saved-places export under places-db/melbourne/data/, so jeff_note stays empty rather than being composed. The chef-hangout line on the master row is somebody's enrichment text, not Jeff's, and it did not survive checking.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
could-visit — Go for the terrace and the cigar, and know what you are getting. Siglo is an open-air rooftop above the Melbourne Supper Club, commissioned in 2007, with white-clothed tables, Parisian wicker chairs and a view across Spring Street to Parliament, St Patrick's and the Princess Theatre. The humidor is the real specialty and Broadsheet calls it a sight to behold. The drinks are classic cocktails, spirits and champagne, done properly by table service, and Time Out's Rebecca Russo names one house build, a Grand Gunner of two rums with fig and cinnamon bitters, nutmeg syrup and egg white. What is not here is any evidence of a bar programme: no award, no competition placing, no menu cycle, no house ingredient work beyond that one drink, and no chef in Melbourne's 74-pick corpus names it. Food and drink craft come before the room, so this lands as a late stop rather than the send. If you want Melbourne's benchmark cocktails, Caretaker's Cottage is the address. Come here after midnight, when Russo says the view is finally free.
