The courtyard. Una Cruickshank's Time Out review calls it the Alderman's best-loved feature
, long and narrow and threaded with strings of coloured lights, and says it pulls more drinkers than the inside of the bar even on foul nights (Time Out). The front room has a bowed bar and shelves of sporting trophies and ceramic wildlife. The back room has a fireplace with leather bellows and a collection of board games, and a staircase runs up to an art gallery called Death Be Kind. The venue calls itself one of the oldest bars in Brunswick East, and the food is Sicilian, cooked by Bar Idda and carried across (The Alderman).
Order this / avoid
- Order: a glass of wine in the yard, or a cocktail by the fire when it is cold. Sicilian plates from Bar Idda if you want to eat.
- Avoid: Monday, when it is shut, and any expectation of a tap list or a whisky back bar. Neither exists here.

The atmosphere is that of a very grown-up, well behaved house party: it's relaxed, attitude-free and neighbourly, the kind of place where it seems OK to chat with the stranger sitting next to you.
She also warns about finding it:With its narrow, dark-painted shopfront and minimal signage it's easily missed by passers-by, and even repeat visitors have been known to wander past it.

- Where: 134 Lygon Street, Brunswick East, at the upper end away from the Carlton restaurants.
- Timing: open evenings, closed Monday, and late on Friday and Saturday. The venue publishes no hours, so what is here comes from Time Out's 2010 listing and the exact times will have moved.
- Booking: walk-in. The upstairs lounge and deck take function bookings.
- The food is not theirs: Sicilian plates come from Bar Idda, a separate restaurant. Nothing about that kitchen is evidence about this venue.
- Dogs: welcome in the back courtyard, per the review.
- Food safety: Victoria publishes no venue hygiene ratings. Safe Food Victoria's section 53D register of convictions, as at 21 July 2026, carries fifteen entries and this bar is not one of them.4

could-visit — The list had this down as a craft beer and whisky bar with rotating taps. It is not. The venue's own words are 'a thoughtful selection of delicious wine, cocktails, and Sicilian food from our friends at Bar Idda', and the food arrives from the restaurant rather than a kitchen here. What it does have is the courtyard, which Una Cruickshank's five-star Time Out review called the Alderman's best-loved feature, long and narrow and strung with coloured lights, busier than the inside even on a bad night. Behind that: a bowed bar, an old fireplace with leather bellows, a shelf of board games, and a staircase up to an art gallery called Death Be Kind. Her line on the room still reads true, that it feels like 'a very grown-up, well behaved house party'. The problem is the date. That review is from 2010, nobody with a byline has written about the bar since, and no working Melbourne chef names it. Go for a glass in the yard on a warm evening.
