Ligaya Mishan

Critic — New York restaurants at every price band. She writes takeout windows, trucks and one-cook kitchens as readily as she writes the tasting menus. She travels nationally, but New York is where she is based and where her word is worth most.

Ligaya Mishan is a co-chief restaurant critic of The New York Times, based in New York, and she has been reviewing restaurants since 2007, first for The New Yorker and then for the Times. From 2012 to 2020 she wrote the weekly Hungry City column, devoted to the city's small, often immigrant-run neighbourhood restaurants, and she became a chief restaurant critic in 2025. The Times pays for every meal she reviews, she books under aliases so no kitchen sees her coming, and she takes no invitations from chefs or publicists.
