Trimani il Wine Bar
Trimani prices its Barolo off the enoteca next door, at shop markup.
Why go
The bar and the shop are one business through two doors, and the markups come off the adjacent enoteca (Roma Capitale). Carla runs the food and Francesco the wine. Sarah Cicolini comes for the Italian range and goes deep on the Langhe.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the braised beef cheek with mashed potato, which Sarah Cicolini names as one of the best dishes here. The dishes of the day turn with the market, and a salumi and cheese board or the anchovy tart starts the table.
- Avoid: Sunday, when it is closed.
What locals & experts say
- Gambero Rosso (2025), on the two businesses:
Among the oldest wine shops in Rome, in this spot since 1876. The wine bar right beside the enoteca is more recent, 1991, but no less well known.
1 - Sarah Cicolini, chef-owner of Santo Palato (The Relisher, 2025):
a wine bar known for its incredible selection of wines from all over Italy, especially from the Langhe region—a well-known area in Piedmont famous for its rich red wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. Here, you can pair your wine with delicious small bites.
4 - Roma Capitale (civic listing): prices accessible against the Roman average, because the markups come from the enoteca next door.3
Good to know
- Timing: lunch and evening, into the night. Closed Sunday.
- Booking: recommended for a table; the bar takes walk-ins for a glass.
- Where: Via Cernaia 37b, Castro Pretorio, near Piazza della Repubblica.
Verdict
should-visit — A wine shop that has stood on the same corner since 1876 with a bar bolted onto it since 1991, pricing off the shop next door, which is why a Barolo here reads cheap against the rest of the city. Sarah Cicolini sends people for the Langhe reds and the small plates beside them. Gambero Rosso carries it among the historic rooms and names Buccone as the family's other century-old door. It stops short of must-visit because I have not found a scored review of the pour or the kitchen.
