Bartlett's
The steaks go over live oak, and the ribeye sits a hundred hours in pineapple, sesame and ginger before it gets there.1
Why go
This is the neighborhood steakhouse on West Anderson Lane. Nicolai McCrary scored it 8.3 for The Infatuation on a straightforward argument: the classics, done properly, with no downtown parking and no three-month wait.1 Burgers and steaks share the menu, so the bill scales with the night you want.1 The live-oak grill is what separates it. Oak burns hot and clean and throws a dry smoke, so the char reads as smoke and never as soot. The hundred-hour marinade is chemistry as much as flavor. Pineapple carries bromelain, a protease that breaks down connective tissue, so four days in it is a tenderizing decision.
Order this / avoid
- Start with the grilled artichokes, charred at the edges and still sizzling when they land, under a remoulade that puts the fat and the acid back.1
- Then the ribeye, out of the 100-hour pineapple, sesame and ginger marinade, which is McCrary's favorite cut here.1
- At lunch, take the French dip, built from the prime rib trimmings.1
- Finish with the key lime pie, which McCrary rates among the best in town. The pecans in the graham crust are the Texan part.1
- Avoid: expecting a long steak list. It runs filets, strips and the classics and stops there.1
What locals & experts say
- Nicolai McCrary scored it 8.3 for The Infatuation, page-dated 19 March 2025:
Steaks are grilled over live oak, giving them a distinct smoky flavor and rich char.
He also notes this is one of the few rooms in town serving a good prime rib any night of the week.1 - Tyson Cole ordered the same starter fourteen years earlier. The Austin Chronicle asked a dozen chefs in September 2011 where they eat after a shift, and the chef behind Uchi and Uchiko answered with
a plate of grilled artichokes and trout at Bartlett's
. That is the same opener McCrary reaches for in 2025.3 - The Infatuation files it in four of its city guides: best steakhouses, best sandwiches, the dessert bucket list, and dinner with the parents. The sandwich placement is the French dip and the dessert placement is the key lime pie.1
Good to know
- Where it is: 2408 W Anderson Lane, in North Shoal Creek.1
- Dress: no sports coat needed.1
- Hygiene: clean and fully tracked. Austin Public Health holds one business at 2408 W Anderson Ln, scoring 94 on 24 February 2026, then 97, 91, 92 and 88 going back to December 2023. Five inspections, rising, with nothing close to the 70 that Austin's ordinance treats as failing.4
Verdict
should-visit — Book it. Order the artichokes before anything else lands, and let one steak cover two people if the table also wants the French dip. Skip it for a big celebration, because the list is too short to build a long night on.
