Birdie's
This room gives its staff four weeks of paid vacation, paid family leave, subsidized therapy and health insurance, and Food & Wine made it Restaurant of the Year in 2023 for exactly that.4
Why go
Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel cooks. Her husband Arjav Ezekiel buys the wine. They run the room as an argument about restaurant labor. The cooking is seasonal American, leaning French and Italian. The prix fixe turns over monthly. The wine list moves with it, and the restaurant says so: the list evolves with what Tracy's cooking and the weather outside.
6 All of it comes out of a counter you queue at.
Order this / avoid
- Order: there is one menu and you take it. $79 buys around five courses, and the kitchen will handle vegetarians and pescatarians on any of them. Order wine while you stand in the line, because somebody works down it taking drinks.6
- Avoid: showing up with cash or with nine people. They take cards only, and anything over eight needs a large-party booking arranged in advance.6
What locals & experts say
- Nicolai McCrary scored it 9.5 for The Infatuation:
A meal here is homey and thoughtful, like a dinner party thrown by your very talented chef friend where creative dishes keep coming and you can never seem to find the bottom of your wine glass.
He files the food as New American in the sense that the only reliable through-lines are seasonality and local produce. The same outlet put it fifth in its 2026 Top 25 for the city.12 - Food & Wine ranked it fourth in America on the 2024 Global Tastemakers list, polled from 180 food and travel journalists: the
husband-and-wife team Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel and Arjav Ezekiel elevates every part of your experience with thoughtfulness, from the chuggable wine selection to the surprising New American menu where expensive steak shares the spotlight with an addictive portion of creamy soft-serve ice cream.
4 - Eric Sandler, CultureMap Austin, on the 2024 James Beard finalists:
Of Austin's five semifinalists, only one, Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel of Birdie's, earned finalist status.
She lost the category to Ana Liz Pulido of Ana Liz Taqueria in Mission.3 - James Beard Foundation, 2025: Arjav Ezekiel took Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service on 16 June, in the category's first year, and it was Austin's only Beard win that cycle.5
Good to know
- Dinner only, Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday.6
- Where: the corner of 12th and Harvey in Rosewood, 2944 East 12th Street, Unit A. It sits in a residential block, and the restaurant asks people to stay out of the neighbors' driveways.6
- Family and dogs: children are welcome and there is a kids' menu. Leashed dogs are fine on the back patio.6
- Hygiene: Austin Public Health scores it 92, inspected 18 July 2025, on a 100-point scale where 100 is clean and under 70 fails. Earlier scores were 86, 94 and 90, back to 2023.7
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Jbf nominee 2024."
Verdict
must-visit — Five seats a night go up on OpenTable and everything else is first come, so the line is the reservation. There is no phone here; email or Instagram if you need to ask them something. Let Arjav Ezekiel's floor pour for you, which is the part of this room I would not skip. Skip the whole thing if you want to choose your own dinner, because there is one menu and it is theirs.
