Komé: Sushi Kitchen

The miso is the best bowl on a four-bowl list, and the rating on this room is really a rating of the ramen.1

Why go

Také and Kayo Asazu moved the room to Airport Boulevard in 2017.3 They also run Uroko in East Austin. The designer who did this dining room did their Daruma Ramen and Sa-ten Coffee & Eats as well.3 Raphael Brion reviewed it for The Infatuation in 2023. What he mostly reviewed was the ramen. The four bowls are each built to a different weight.1

Order this / avoid

  • Order the miso. The vegetarian miso comes topped with fried tofu skin.1
  • The grilled mackerel filet off the bento list, which is Brion's pick of those boxes.1
  • The rolls, if you came for sushi. They arrive loaded, usually under go-go sauce, a house spicy mayo.1
  • Avoid: counting on ramen at dinner. The 2023 review records the noodles as dine-in at lunch only, so call ahead.1

What locals & experts say

  • The Infatuation Austin rates it 8.2, and Raphael Brion spends the review on the bowls: Komé also makes very good ramen, including a phenomenal and well-rounded miso (with an umami mushroom base, chili oil, and chili threads), a vegetarian miso (topped with fried tofu skin), a more subtle tonkotsu that won't bonk you over the head, and a delicate shoyu.1
  • Kate Thornberry, reviewing the original room for the Austin Chronicle in 2012: unlike the sea of indistinguishable strip-mall sushi places that seem to open with regularity, Komé is one of these impossible gems of individuality.2

Good to know

  • Hygiene: no finding. Austin Public Health scores the kitchen, listed as Kome Sushi Kitchen at 5301 Airport Blvd Unit 100, 97 on 4 May 2026, and 97, 95, 94 and 90 back through 2024. A 75 in March 2024 is the low. Everything since has climbed away from it. Nothing sits below the city's failing line of 70. Kome & Toma Taco Bar on East Slaughter Lane is a different business with its own inspection record.4
  • Walk in. Nobody publishes a booking policy or current hours.

Verdict

should-visit — Order noodles here and sushi somewhere else, at least until somebody writes about the counter. That is the whole call on a room whose name says the opposite.

Order

  • The miso ramen, umami mushroom base with chili oil and chili threads
  • The grilled mackerel filet bento
  • The rolls with go-go sauce

The steamed egg with ground pork costs three dollars: soft and flan-like, with the pork swimming in chili oil, and the critic's verdict is that until inflation catches up it is the best three dollars you can spend in Austin.
