La Popular
Most of the menu is tacos and the kitchen makes the corn tortillas under them.1
Why go
La Popular ran in Mexico City and in Northern California before it took a space out at Lantana Place, past Oak Hill.1 The kitchen sends out fancier versions of the classics, mostly on housemade corn tortillas with a few deliberately on flour, plus a short list of plates and desserts. The bar is the part worth the drive. Nicolai McCrary notes that the cocktail menu is almost entirely agave-based and that the sipping selection covers tequilas, mezcals and sotols, which is a shelf almost nothing else in this corpus offers. No producer, bottle or additive policy is on record for any of it.
Order this / avoid
- Order: tacos off the corn tortillas, and a sotol from the sipping list rather than another margarita.1
- Avoid: assuming corn across the board. A few tacos come on flour, and the review says so without saying which.1
What locals & experts say
- Nicolai McCrary, The Infatuation (2023): the menu is
taco-heavy, with fancy versions of classics served mostly on housemade corn tortillas (a few come on flour).
1 - On the bar:
The cocktail menu is almost entirely agave-based, and there's a large selection of tequilas, mezcals, and sotols for sipping.
1 - No verdict has been written. The page carries no rating, assesses no dish, and no second approved Austin desk has covered the room. That is the whole record.
Good to know
- Getting there: Lantana Place off Southwest Parkway, a drive from central Austin rather than a walk from anywhere.
- Hygiene: Austin Public Health scores the kitchen 82, inspected 24 April 2026. The two readings before it are both 93. Austin's failing line is 70 and nothing here is near it. La Traviata trades in the same development under its own permit with its own numbers, and those are not this kitchen's.3
- Timing: the kitchen runs 11am to 10pm on weekdays, and the house programs its own week: happy hour 3pm to 6pm and again from 9pm, all day Tuesday for Tacos and Tequila, live music from 6pm on Wednesdays.2
- Price: not published on any page read.
Verdict
could-visit — A Mexico City house in Lantana Place, out past Oak Hill, running a taco-heavy menu on housemade corn tortillas with a few sent out on flour. The bar is the argument: the cocktails are almost entirely agave and the sipping shelf carries sotol alongside the tequila and mezcal, which is rare enough in this city to be the reason to drive. Mid-ladder because the only approved review describes the place without assessing a single plate.
