Radio Coffee & Beer
There is a Texas Monthly Top 50 barbecue truck in this parking lot, and the biscuit it built is engineered to hold brisket without going to pieces.1
Why go
The trucks are the part that changes the plan. Daniel Vaughn put Briscuits into Texas Monthly's Top 50 Texas BBQ Joints for 2025 at this exact address, which makes a coffee house with a beer wall also one of the fifty best barbecue stops in the state.1 Christopher McGhee and Will Spence have run it since 2021 on oak in an offset smoker, Thursday to Sunday, 8am to 3:30pm.1 A Veracruz All Natural outpost has been in the same lot since the bar opened.2 Jack Wilson opened the place with his father Greg after working the Seattle coffee and beer scenes at Victrola Coffee and Hopvine Pub, which is how a South Austin bar ended up with Stumptown nitro on draft.2 The room is wood-lined, the patio wraps the building, and The Infatuation carries it in both its best-patios list and its best-cafes-for-working list without a score, because the outlet does not rate coffee shops.4
Order this / avoid
- The brisket, egg and cheddar biscuit from Briscuits, which Texas Monthly calls a knockout.1 Also on that page: blueberry-Gouda sausage with a hint of thyme under smoked blueberry jam, brisket with smoked strawberry jelly, pork belly with spiced apple-pear preserves, and pork belly burnt ends in a spicy-sweet jalapeno glaze. Go Thursday to Sunday morning or the truck is shut.
- Coffee first, and make it the Stumptown nitro. It pours like a nitro stout with a creamy head, and Jack Wilson gets it through his Pacific Northwest connections.2 Do not ask for an iced toddy; they do not make them.
- Then the Veracruz All Natural trailer if it is not barbecue hours. Nobody names a dish at this particular Veracruz outpost, so pick at the window rather than trusting a list.2
- A beer on the patio off a wall that ran to 24 taps of largely local beer and cider at opening, Austin Beerworks and (512) Brewing and Austin Eastciders among them.2
- Avoid: leaving a plate unattended outside. The review names the grackles.4
What locals & experts say
- Daniel Vaughn, Texas Monthly's barbecue editor, Top 50 Texas BBQ Joints 2025, verbatim:
The truck at Radio Coffee and Beer has developed a sturdy biscuit that holds up to layers of barbecue.
The listing is under Austin in The Best of the Rest, the unranked part of the fifty below the numbered top ten, and the address on it is 4204 Menchaca Rd.1 The accolade is Briscuits' and not this bar's, and it happens to be parked here. - Arianna Auber in the Austin American-Statesman, verbatim on the layout:
The slightly rustic, wood-lined space has seating both indoors and out and another Veracruz All Natural mobile outpost near the shaded outdoor area.
2 - The Infatuation Austin, Nicolai McCrary, page dated 28 August 2023, verbatim on what makes the address worth the drive:
Most importantly: there's a location of Veracruz All Natural parked permanently outside.
The page carries no score. The outlet states its own policy on the page: it will not rate a coffee shop.4 - Two trucks, not one. Texas Monthly places a second, separately owned barbecue truck in the same lot, and Matthew Odam reports the sister Radio in Southeast Austin running three trucks at once. Check what is open before you decide what you are eating.3
Good to know
- Hygiene: one inspection, and it is old. Austin Public Health scored the kitchen at 4204 Menchaca Rd 94 on 22 March 2024 and has published nothing for the address since, so take that score with its date rather than as a current all-clear. It is not a failing score; Austin's failing threshold is below 70.5
- The taco trailer has no score at all. Veracruz All Natural trades here as a mobile vendor, and Austin's published dataset covers fixed food establishments only. No inspection result exists for the operation that does the cooking, and that absence is not a clean bill of health.5
- Two other rooms trade as Radio and are not this one. Radio Rosewood at 1115 E 11th St and Radio / East at 3504 Montopolis Dr are inspected separately, and neither score belongs to this address.5 The Montopolis room is the 2023 second location, with an acre of parking, RCB Roasters coffee and a bigger music program.3
- Parking at this one is the trade-off. Odam's word for it is that it
can be trying
, and he tells neighbors to walk or ride.3 - Getting there: Menchaca Road in South Austin, and note the street name is spelled Manchaca on the review page and Menchaca in the city register.
Verdict
should-visit — RE-SCORED 2026-08-08 on evidence found in this pass. Jack Wilson opened this in 2017 with his father after working Seattle coffee and beer, which is why a South Austin cabin has Stumptown nitro cold brew on draft next to twenty-four taps of mostly Texas beer and cider. That alone is a good coffee house. What makes it a destination is the parking lot: Briscuits, oak in an offset smoker since 2021 from Christopher McGhee and Will Spence, is in Texas Monthly's Top 50 Texas BBQ Joints for 2025 at this address, and Daniel Vaughn's line is that the truck built a biscuit sturdy enough to carry barbecue. Blueberry-Gouda sausage under smoked blueberry jam, brisket with smoked strawberry jelly, pork belly with apple-pear preserves. A Veracruz All Natural outpost is in the same lot for the days the smoker is cold. Time it Thursday to Sunday morning, or you get the coffee and not the point.
