Austin coffee.

a habit of the place · Austin, and mostly on the east side

Food & Wine named Austin the No. 1 Best U.S. Coffee City in April 2026, off a survey of more than 400 chefs, writers and wine professionals. The rooms that won it are mostly built inside somebody else's business, so the espresso bar shares a lot with a beer wall, a barbecue truck or a bakery.

What it is

Food & Wine put Austin first among American coffee cities in April 2026, and the Statesman reported the line: "In its latest round of global travel awards, Food & Wine named Austin the No. 1 Best U.S. Coffee City." 1 Ana Gutierrez also printed who votes. The rankings "are built from a survey of more than 400 chefs, travel experts, food and travel writers and wine professionals around the world", so this is the trade talking and not a reader poll. 1 Pastry landed beside it at No. 4, and the city took No. 7 overall. 1

Why it matters here

The best of these rooms are not coffee shops. Radio Coffee & Beer pours Stumptown nitro against a wall that opened with 24 taps of local beer and cider, and the barbecue truck in its lot is on Texas Monthly's Top 50. 5 11 Wright Bros. Brew and Brew was built as two businesses under one roof, and Matthew Bolick's line on it is It's 50-50 and equally well done. 3 The same people took a West Fifth lot in 2018, turned the rental office into Better Half Coffee & Cocktails and the Quonset hut behind it into a brewery two years later. 6 At Mum Foods Smokehouse And Delicatessen the coffee is a Talisman counter inside a smokehouse, and Daniel Vaughn's pro tip is to use it. 11 CultureMap opened its own coffee shortlist on the habit: "Austinites live at coffee shops." 2

How it is done

Ask who roasted the beans. At Wright Bros. Brew and Brew the answer is Flat Track, a few blocks over, alongside Sightglass and De La Paz. 3 At Radio Coffee & Beer it is Stumptown, on draft, because Jack Wilson worked Seattle coffee before he opened a bar in South Austin. 5 Klerje Coffee splits its board into five named sections and Nicolai McCrary points away from the drip: "this is really a place for premium pour-overs and thoughtfully crafted signature drinks". 7 Texas Coffee Traders has been selling the other shops their beans for thirty years. CultureMap credits it with "helping other Austin coffee shops get their feet off the ground with beans, equipment, and community support". 2

Who does it

Matthew Bolick trained as a barista at Frank and co-owns Flat Track, the roaster that supplies his own espresso bar. He opened Brew & Brew with the brothers Matt and Grady Wright in 2013 and Better Half with them in 2018. 3 6 Amanda Rockman bakes for two counters. Her own is Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop on East Cesar Chavez, and McCrary's order there is the "kouign-amann with crisp and buttery edges, and rip-and-dip bagels you'll want to turn into a weekly habit". 9

Where to get it

You can eat Amanda Rockman's baking without walking into her bakery. Fleet Coffee opened its fourth room on Rainey Street in June 2026, next door to Bar Fino, and it sells her pastries beside its own espresso: "Fleet Coffee is serving its own signature coffee and espresso drinks, plus pastries from Rockman Coffee + Bakeshop." 10

Also sold off the list

These shops and counters carry it, and none of them is on the list.

The story

The pairing is older than the award. Brew & Brew opened on 29 September 2013, after two and a half years of work, in the room Progress Coffee had left, and the plan was a coffee bar and a tap wall staffed as equals. 3 Marisa Dunn wrote thirteen years later that "you can get an equally-excellent cold brew or IPA". 4 Then a trade survey caught up. CultureMap's 2026 Tastemaker shortlist for coffee shop of the year runs to ten rooms, and Brew & Brew and Radio Coffee & Beer are both on it. 2
