Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden
The cocktail list was built around the garden on the property, cut herbs and vegetables into the drinks, and put tequila, mezcal and sotol behind them.1
Why go
Patrick Dean and Paul Oveisi opened this on 8 January 2018 with 21 taps pointed at Texas drafts and a yard that was designed as habitat before it was designed as seating: a certified wildlife habitat, a pond, and a chicken coop adapted from an antique carriage.1 Oveisi spent eleven years running Momo's on West Sixth, where Hayes Carll and Los Lonely Boys played some of their first shows, which is why live music is part of the programme here and not a poster on the wall.1 The kitchen is somebody else's: rotating trucks park on the lot, and at opening the anchor was LeRoy & Lewis.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a garden cocktail. It is the one thing here nobody else in the coffee-and-beer format was attempting when this opened.1
- Then: tacos from Pueblo Viejo, which The Infatuation rates 7.9 at this address. The rating is the truck's.4
- Avoid: driving out here for LeRoy and Lewis. It started as a truck on this lot and now trades from its own building at 5621 Emerald Forest Drive, a few miles further south, where it carries a 9.5.3
What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation, Jordan Haro, rates nothing here, because the outlet scores only places where you can eat a full meal. On the drinks range he writes,
Between the beer, coffee, wine, and cocktail selection, you can basically drink here for the entire day.
He names the porch, the backyard, the nighttime fire pits and dogs allowed inside and out.2 - CultureMap, December 2017, placed the opening in context and named who got to coffee-and-beer first in this city: Wright Bros. Brew & Brew, Radio Coffee & Beer, and Cedar Park's Red Horn.1
- The Infatuation's truck roster is partly out of date. It lists Pueblo Viejo, Tommy Want Wingy and Leroy & Lewis, and the third has its own building now. I haven't found the current lineup published anywhere.23
Good to know
- This is the Pickle Road original. The same group runs Cosmic Saltillo at 1300 E 4th St, which is a separate bar with its own health record. The Pueblo Viejo truck on this lot is likewise its own door: the 7.9 above is the 121 Pickle Rd branch, and the other Pueblo Viejo truck trades at 2000 E Cesar Chavez St.4
- Hours, with their date. The announced opening hours in December 2017 were 7am to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 7am to 1am Friday and Saturday. Nothing current is published.1
- Hygiene: clean, with one follow-up in the record. Austin Public Health registers facility 11804611 at 121 Pickle Rd Suite 111, scoring 91 on 30 April 2026, 100 on a follow-up inspection on 29 January 2025 after a routine 85 on 14 January 2025, and 91 on 27 September 2023. Nothing near the city's 70-point failing line. The trucks are mobile vendors and no public inspection score exists for them.5
Verdict
could-visit — The cocktail list was designed around a garden on the property, using vegetables and herbs cut on site and leaning on tequila, mezcal and sotol, which is a more specific idea than any coffee-plus-beer room needs to have. Twenty-one taps were aimed at Texas producers when Patrick Dean and Paul Oveisi opened on 8 January 2018, and Oveisi came to it after eleven years running Momo's on West Sixth. The Infatuation's Jordan Haro says you can drink here all day across beer, coffee, wine and cocktails, and describes a porch, a backyard and nighttime fire pits with dogs allowed throughout. The food is the trucks' business, and the truck that made this lot famous, LeRoy and Lewis, has moved to its own building a few miles south.
