Austin breweries in drinking order.
I send people to four beer rooms in Austin: Meanwhile, Lazarus, Austin Beerworks at Sprinkle Valley for the barbecue parked on its lot, and Nosh and Bevvy for the British end. Everything after them runs in my order of drinking: sours first, then the hops, then the British ale and the cask. The yards come next, because for most of the year the shade decides the afternoon before the beer does, then the four rooms I would hand to somebody else, and the four addresses that need a car come last.
Four rooms come first, and the glass at each one is the reason: Meanwhile for Secret Beach and whatever fruited beer is on the wall, Lazarus on Airport Boulevard for a West Coast IPA with carnitas tacos beside it, Austin Beerworks at Sprinkle Valley for a golden sour and the barbecue trailer on the same acres, and Nosh and Bevvy for fish and chips and a nightly curry. Everything after them runs sours, then hops, then the British and cask end, then the yards, then the lagers, then the drive. Underneath sits Eric Puga's Austin Chronicle brewery power rankings, the only scored brewery ranking this city publishes, and my first pick is his first place. Four of these addresses need a car, and of those four only Oasis carries an Austin hygiene score. Live Oak and Zilker are the two big names with nothing recent published about them, so go on their 2024 Cup medals.
Meanwhile, Lazarus, Austin Beerworks and Nosh and Bevvy.
Arrive hungry at Austin Beerworks in Sprinkle Valley, because Parish Barbecue is parked on that lot, and that is the one of my four worth building a whole day around. I drink sours and IPAs first, I am not a lager or a heavy-stout drinker, and the British end is the one I keep going back to. Three of these four also sit high on Eric Puga's Austin Chronicle brewery power rankings, and where Puga and I disagree I have written the disagreement down.
- Meanwhile BrewingSoutheast Austin
This is my first pick, and it took first in the city on the Chronicle's 2024 ranking. Drink Secret Beach, the San Diego-style IPA that took gold at the 2023 Texas Craft Brewers Cup, then Tender Robot, the hazy. The sour end is a Blueberry Yuzu Berliner Weisse and Picnic Party No. 3, a mezcalita sour. Meanwhile Pilsner carries the medals and it is not the beer I would cross town for.
- Austin Beerworks - Sprinkle ValleyNortheast Austin · $$
My own note reads "austin beerworks particularly sprinkle valley (with parish bbq)", and the pairing is the pick. Parish Barbecue trades from this lot with a Bib Gourmand behind it, on sixty-four acres that are mostly outdoors, so this is an afternoon rather than a pint on the way home. Drink Killer Strains Golden Sour Ale, silver at the 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup, or Fire Eagle IPA. Sputnik is a heavy oatmeal coffee stout, and if that is not your beer the Fire Eagle is the one.
- Austin BeerworksNorth Burnet
The Industrial Terrace original keeps its experimental releases in the room, so ask what is taproom-only before you order anything you can buy at H-E-B. Floaty is a hazy session IPA built on Cascade, Citra Cryo, Mosaic, Saphir, Simcoe and Strata, which is the closest thing here to an all-day IPA. Golden Sour took silver at the 2023 World Beer Cup. Puga's line on this door: "OG ABW is simply one of the highlights of the Austin beer experience."
- Lazarus Brewing Co. Airport Blvd.North Loop
This is the Lazarus door with the bigger kitchen, and the one to pick if you drink hops. The flagship list runs 40 Days & 40 Nights, a West Coast IPA, and Lightning Wolf, a hazy, and the pilsner program took two Great American Beer Festival golds in September 2023, one of them for Prodigal Pils. Every beer is enzyme-treated to under 20 parts per million of gluten. Order the carnitas tacos with a pilsner, which is The Infatuation's own pairing at this address.
- Lazarus Brewing Co.East Austin
The East Sixth original has traded since late 2016 and builds its tacos on a layer of cheese melted onto the tortilla. The same flagships pour at both doors, so the choice between them is the kitchen and the room, and this door is tacos, tortas and a shaded patio with the coffee roasted in house.
- Nosh and BevvyNorth Shoal Creek
My British pick sits in a Burnet Road strip mall behind red phone boxes. Nicolai McCrary sends you to the fish and chips for the crust and to one of the Indian curries the kitchen runs nightly, which is the actual British pub template. It is on this list on my own recommendation, "nosh and bevvy for british beer and things", and I have not found anyone who publishes what is on the taps.
The two sour programs.
Drink the two Austin sour programs against each other, because they share almost no equipment. Jester King ferments spontaneously on a ranch southwest of town, catches its house culture off foraged flowers and berries, and blends across years. Blue Owl Brewing sours on the grain in a single building designed around the technique, using the bacteria and yeast already living on the malt, which is a bourbon move applied to beer. For a sour on a wider board, St. Elmo Brewing Company runs kettle sours beside its kolsch and its hop wall, and Nomadic Beerworks puts fruited sours next to American and Czech pilsners. The readers of Craft Beer & Brewing voted Jester King first in the world for sour and wild ale, ahead of Russian River, Cantillon and 3 Fonteinen, which is a readers' vote and not a judging panel's.
- Jester KingFitzhugh Road, southwest Travis County
Montmorency vs. Balaton is built on six pounds of cherries per gallon and Puga calls it "perhaps the most perfect beer in town". SPON Three Year Blend took gold at the 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup, and Atrial Rubicite, the raspberry ale, took bronze the year before. Noble King is the hoppy farmhouse ale built on the ranch well water, the local malt and the native microflora. Ron Extract explains the refusal to brew a straightforward IPA in one line: a better version of a beer everyone already makes contributes nothing to the world of beer.
- Blue Owl BrewingEast Cesar Chavez
Every beer in the building is soured on the grain, in a Modular Inoculation Unit the founder designed so the process repeats. The house measures acidity in its own published Sour Units, which is the most useful number on any board in this city. Little Gose is the one the Chronicle picked out of a ten-brewery Texas survey, for tangerine zest and Thai basil. Professor Black is the sour-mashed cherry stout. The room is dark Monday and Tuesday, and it has been under new owners since May 2025.
- St. Elmo Brewing CompanySt. Elmo, South Austin · $$
St. Elmo is the South Austin brewhouse, where the kettle sours sit beside the kolsch and the hop wall and the mash smell hits you on the walk in. Carl, the house kolsch, took bronze in its category at the 2024 International Beer Awards. Canopy is the double dry hopped IPA to look for, and Patty Palace runs a smashburger counter inside the taproom that McCrary rates the best in Austin.
- Nomadic BeerworksSouth Austin · $$
The board is deliberate range rather than a signature: hazy IPAs, American pilsners, fruited sours and West Coast IPAs off one wall, with Super Uber the festbier the Chronicle picked out. Current house pours include Euro Trip, a Czech pilsner, and Single Fin, a West Coast pilsner. Ask what fruited beer is on before you settle in, because nothing here is held out as the flagship.
Electric Jellyfish and Ethics & Standards.
Drink Electric Jellyfish at Pinthouse Pizza for the beer most of this city drinks, then Ethics & Standards at Oddwood Brewing for the better one. The Jellyfish is the highest-selling craft beer by volume in Austin. Ethics & Standards took the 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup gold for IPA against ninety-three statewide entrants. Independence Brewing Co., Fast Friends Beer Company and Vacancy Brewing run smaller hop programs worth a detour, and Vacancy sits two doors down East St. Elmo Road from St. Elmo Brewing Company, which turns the pair of them into one stop.
- Pinthouse PizzaBrentwood, Burnet Road
Pinthouse opened this Burnet Road brewpub in 2012, and it is where to drink Electric Jellyfish on its home ground: a hazy IPA on Citra, Simcoe, Chinook, Ekuanot, Azacca and Galaxy. Green Battles took gold in American-Style Strong Pale Ale at the 2024 World Beer Cup. The rotating bench runs Training Bines and Fully Adrift, which Puga argues "should be the most coveted IPA in town". Scorpion Disco is the clean West Coast one. The cheeseburger pizza is gone and the Chronicle's beer writer has not forgiven them.
- Oddwood BrewingManor Road, Windsor Park · $$
The beer runs to saisons, pale ales and lagers rather than the hops most taprooms here lead with, and McCrary's verdict on all three styles is one word: excellent. Pro-Tip pilsner took critics' choice at the 2024 Pils Off. The room is wood and low light with an arcade off to one side, and KG BBQ smokes on the patio, so plan this stop around a meal.
- Independence Brewing Co.Southeast Austin · $$
Independence has brewed here since 2004 and is small enough that the canning line runs behind you while you drink. McCrary's verdict is the argument for the detour: "this small brewery and taproom in South Austin makes some of our favorite imperial IPAs and oatmeal stouts in town." Order Stash IPA at the bar counter. His warning is worth keeping, that this reads as a working brewery next to the bigger rooms in town that are mostly patio.
- Fast Friends Beer CompanySoutheast Austin · $$
Head brewer Keith Shaw came out of Modern Times in Anaheim, and the board is lager-first: Fritz German Pilsner, Vadr Dark Czech Lager, and Sup Y'all, the IPA that cans as a West Coast. Silent Laughter, a red IPA, took silver in Specialty Hop at the Texas Craft Brewers Cup. It runs three acres, a two-story family beer garden and a barrel room, and the in-house kitchen sends out a Jala Pep jalapeno-swirl pepperoni pizza.
- Vacancy BrewingSt. Elmo, South Austin · $$
A narrow board on purpose, and both of its 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup silvers landed in the lanes it says it cares about: Vacancy Classic, the American lager and best seller, and Sunrise Snorkel in the Session IPA category by name. Brent and Sara Watson left the Bay Area, spent six months driving, and opened this on 2 April 2021. The motels along Route 66 gave it the name and the look.
Make a walk of it
Two doors sit on East St. Elmo Road, 415 and 440, in the same warehouse district. Take Vacancy first for Sunrise Snorkel, the session IPA that took silver, then walk to St. Elmo for the kolsch, the kettle sours and the hop wall.
Draught House and Nosh and Bevvy.
Draught House Pub & Brewery and Nosh and Bevvy hold the British thread between them, and they hold different halves of it. The Draught House has been a pub since 1969 and has brewed its own since 1995, and its house list is where the English style names live: an extra special bitter, an English pale ale, a sipping bitter, a vanilla porter. Josh Wilson has run that seven-barrel kit for three decades and rotates the recipes hard enough that the Chronicle gave up tracking styles. Nosh and Bevvy is the pub half, curry board and all. What neither of them settles is cask: I have not found anyone who publishes whether a drop of it comes off a handpump, and the Draught House's own copy describes a wide range of ales and lagers with an emphasis on American hops, which says nothing about how the beer is pulled.
- Draught House Pub & BreweryRosedale
More than twenty of the seventy-four tap handles pour beer brewed on the premises, off a kit the Chronicle calls pint-sized. NutBush Extra Special Bitter and Trophy English pale ale are the two the paper's beer writer drinks first, with a vanilla porter it calls "criminally overlooked". Blackpool Bitter is the sipping ale, mellow hops over a toasty backbone. There is no kitchen, so the food is whichever truck is parked, and the old tailgating lot is now a permanent Oktoberfest area under a tent.
- Nosh and BevvyNorth Shoal Creek
Nosh and Bevvy is the second half of the British answer, and the only room on this list where the cooking is the reviewed thing. McCrary rests his case on fish and chips fried hard enough to demonstrate how crisp fried fish gets, and on a curry that changes nightly. It runs several seating areas, a pool table and a late licence, and the review files it as a neighborhood pub to settle into.
The beer gardens.
You are drinking outdoors here for eight months of the year, so the shade, the trucks and the room settle the afternoon before the beer gets a vote. That is why Meanwhile Brewing wins Eric Puga's ranking outright, and why (512) Brewing Company brews a Pecan Porter this good and still finishes low, on a tasting room with no garden at all. Two rooms in this section brew nothing and are here for their taps: Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden pours Texas drafts into a certified wildlife habitat with a pond and a chicken coop built out of an antique carriage, and Wright Bros. Brew and Brew is the East Side coffee bar that pours other people's beer.
- The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co.Bouldin Creek
Six Great American Beer Festival medals and three GABF Brewpub of the Year trophies sit behind this bar. Hell Yes Helles took bronze at the 2024 World Beer Cup and Industry Pils took gold in Pilsner at the Texas Craft Brewers Cup. The core five are all low-alcohol and built to be drunk in sequence, which is the design of the place, and there is live music on the patio most nights.
- Hold Out BrewingClarksville · $$
"Ol' Gil is the best Pilsner in Austin," the Chronicle says flatly, and Neu! Pilz took Texas Craft Brewers Cup gold beside it. Impeachment, a cream ale, took bronze in the Pro-Am category. The food is the brewery's own, cooked behind the bar, so order the Choriqueso Burger or the Chana Masala Frito Pie. Parking is free, which in this part of town is a real feature.
- Central Machine WorksEast Austin · $$
Order the Kentucky Common, a roasty peppery dark cream ale that was Louisville's own beer and that almost nobody brews now. The Vienna lager, the American light lager and the German pilsner sit beside it, and the kitchen sends out pretzels and a Reuben. It closes on Mondays.
- St. Elmo Brewing Company - SpringdaleNortheast Austin · $$
This room is the beer garden, purpose-built out east and open to the public since 13 September 2024, with trucks parked on site from the first night. Vaughn, the German pilsner, took silver at the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship, and Dad American lager, Carl kolsch and Baby, the barrel-aged strong ale, fill out the board. The medals here are in helles bock, kolsch and pilsner rather than IPA, so drink accordingly. The brewing happens at the South Austin original, so come here for the yard and go there for the mash smell.
- Cosmic Coffee + Beer GardenSouth Austin · $
Cosmic points twenty-one taps at Texas producers and pours them into a yard that was designed as habitat before it was designed as seating. Nothing is brewed here. Paul Oveisi ran Momo's on West Sixth for eleven years, which is why the live music is programmed and not decorative. Tacos come from the Pueblo Viejo truck on the lot.
- Hopsquad Brewing CoNorth Austin · $$
The odd beer in the core five is a roggenbier, rye where a dunkelweizen would use wheat, and the Euro pilsners run in French, Italian and Spanish styles. Those two are the reason to come; the beer program is not the city's strongest and the Chronicle has said so. Kramer's Cocktails shares the building and runs an agave list out to sotol, bacanora and raicilla.
Celis, 512, ABGB and Austin Beerworks.
Celis Brewery pours the witbier Pierre Celis brought here from Hoegaarden, (512) Brewing Company the Pecan Porter that half this city learned craft beer on, The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. the lagers Craft Beer & Brewing's readers voted the best in the United States, and Austin Beerworks the pilsner the Chronicle made the official beer of Austin. All four are very good and none of them is what I order, which I am saying at the same time. Live Oak took gold in Wheats and Ryes for its Hefeweizen and silver in German Pilsner for a beer called Gold at the 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup, and Zilker took gold in American and Light Lager with Icy Boys; I have found nothing more recent on either, so go on the medals and check the hours before you drive.
- Celis BreweryNorth Austin · $
Pierre Celis revived Belgian witbier at Hoegaarden and then founded this brewery in Austin in 1992; his daughter Christine runs it now with her daughter Daytona Camps brewing. Celis White is 4.9 percent, brewed with coriander and orange peel, and it is still the pour the place is built on. The taproom pours more than twenty beers, a house Mexican lager called Celis CTX among them, into twelve thousand square feet of beer garden with a music stage. The kitchen is whichever trucks are parked, and the reviews are no guide to that, because the trailer they praise closed in early 2025.
- (512) Brewing Company
Pecan Porter is on any short list of the beers that made Austin craft beer, with a 2022 Texas Craft Brewers Cup bronze in Stouts and Porters and a whiskey-barrel-aged double version. Puga's diagnosis of why a brewery this good ranks low is the room: no beer garden, and a tasting room that opens for four hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Plan around that window.
- The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co.Bouldin Creek
Eric Puga's own judgment is that these are some of the best lagers available in the entire country, and ABGB was the only Texas brewery on the readers' list the prose above cites. Rocket 100, the pre-Prohibition pilsner, is the Friday happy hour pour. I would put every one of them in front of a lager drinker and order the Superliner IPA myself.
- Austin BeerworksNorth Burnet
Pearl Snap is the 5.3 percent pilsner the Chronicle says it drinks "by the kiloliter", and the paper made it the official beer of Austin in 2015. Super Awesome helles has taken two Great American Beer Festival medals and Black Thunder schwarzbier has medaled at both the GABF and the World Beer Cup. Acoustic Metal, the Czech-style dark lager, was the Chronicle beer writer's favorite rotational of 2024.
The four that need a car.
Jester King is the one worth planning a day around, on 165 acres off Fitzhugh Road in unincorporated Travis County, with the brewery built inside a hundred-year-old machine shop and an inn on the property. 12 Fox Beer Co, Suds Monkey Kitchen & Brewery Dripping Springs and Oasis Texas Brewing Company are Hill Country and lakeside rooms where the beer is the second reason to be there. On hygiene, 12 Fox sits in Hays County, which Austin Public Health does not inspect at all, while Jester King and Suds Monkey sit on blocks the agency does reach and hold no record, which is a gap rather than a pass. Routing and timings for the Dripping Springs drive are in the day-trip guide.
- Jester KingFitzhugh Road, southwest Travis County
The drive is the point and the canned beer is the trap: the Japanese rice lager and the helles reach H-E-B now, and the barrel and spontaneous side exists only on the ranch. The farm has its own hop field, a designated farmer, and almost four acres of vines planted in compost carrying the brewery's own mixed culture. Check what is pouring before you commit the afternoon.
- 12 Fox Beer Co$$
Forty-five minutes west under live oaks off Fitzhugh Road, with Gummies BBQ resident five days a week while the taproom itself opens three, so check the calendar and not the taproom hours. House beer pours next to organic European and Hill Country wine. The snack to know about is a cream cheese, chili, onion and ham dip served with Club Crackers, made by a family business in Dripping Springs.
- Suds Monkey Kitchen & Brewery Dripping SpringsUS 290 west · $$
Greg Plummer brewed at Big Buck in Michigan and then at Stone in California before building this on US 290 west. The beer to order is Monkey Wrench Wheat IPA, the lower-alcohol version of the Funky Monkey, where the lighter body lets the hops read louder. The kitchen runs three separate dough programs at one counter, Detroit pan, hand-tossed New York and a gluten-free base, which is three hydrations and three heats in one room. The only published assessment of any of it is nine years old and describes a different building.
- Oasis Texas Brewing CompanyLake Travis · $$
Brewing 450 feet above Lake Travis since 2014, and the Chronicle rates the kitchen above the beer: "Oasis Brewing's kitchen is throwing haymakers with its pimento beer cheese bacon burger and harvest quinoa bowl." Meta Modern Session IPA is the hop pour and Patio Pounder is the light lager. Two things decide whether the drive works: the kitchen closes an hour before the taps every day, and the business shuts for weather often enough that the warning sits at the top of its own homepage.
Jeff's take.
My own list is four names long and I stand behind it, with one correction I would make to myself after reading the record. Meanwhile is first for me and first on the city's own ranking, so there is nothing to argue there. Lazarus I picked as a brand, and the two doors are genuinely different visits, so if you drink hops go to Airport Boulevard for the West Coast IPA and the bigger kitchen, and go to East Sixth for the tacos. Austin Beerworks at Sprinkle Valley is the pick I would defend hardest, because the pairing is the whole point of it: a proper beer program and a pit worth a drive on the same acres. The correction is Oddwood. I left it off, and it is second in the city, which is squarely my palate and I had missed it. If you are drinking my way for a day: Pinthouse for the Jellyfish, Oddwood for the Ethics & Standards, Blue Owl for a sour mash, then Meanwhile for the evening and whatever fruited beer is on the wall.
Questions, answered
Which brewery should I go to if I only like sours?
Two, and they share almost no equipment. Jester King ferments spontaneously on a ranch southwest of town and blends across years; Montmorency vs. Balaton is built on six pounds of cherries per gallon and Eric Puga calls it perhaps the most perfect beer in town
.4 Blue Owl Brewing sours every beer on the grain in a building designed around the technique, and it prints its own acidity number on the board, which the sour section explains. Little Gose runs 3.5 percent, and the room is dark Monday and Tuesday.3 Fruited and kettle sours also run at St. Elmo Brewing Company and Nomadic Beerworks as part of a wider board.1

Where is the best IPA in Austin?
By the only competition that measures it, Oddwood Brewing, and the IPA section above names the beer and the medal.14 The volume answer is Electric Jellyfish at Pinthouse Pizza, a hazy on its home ground at the 2012 Burnet Road brewpub, where Puga argues the rotating Fully Adrift should be the most coveted IPA in town

Which beer gardens actually work with kids?
Central Machine Works runs a large garden that takes dogs and children, and it is closed Mondays.15 Meanwhile Brewing has a 5v5 soccer pitch, a playscape in the middle of the yard and five food trucks around it.1 Fast Friends Beer Company has three acres and a two-story family beer garden with a kitchen in it.16 Call the taproom if you are arriving in the evening.
as of Aug 2026
Which of these need a car?
Four of them need one. Jester King sits on 165 acres off Fitzhugh Road in unincorporated Travis County, 12 Fox Beer Co is forty-five minutes west under live oaks and opens Friday to Sunday, Suds Monkey Kitchen & Brewery Dripping Springs is out on US 290 west, and Oasis Texas Brewing Company brews 450 feet above Lake Travis and shuts for weather often enough that the warning sits at the top of its own homepage.1 Only Oasis carries an Austin hygiene score, 82 in August 2025, and a missing score out there is a gap and not a pass.17
as of Aug 2026
It is 100 degrees. Which taproom is bearable?
Take the indoor half and order the lager. Central Machine Works is the one taproom out here with a beer hall behind its garden, so the Vienna lager and the German pilsner are drinkable there in the middle of the afternoon.15 If you want to stay outside, Meanwhile Brewing pours eight lagers off an eighteen-tap wall, which is the wall you want in August.1 Keep Hopsquad Brewing Co for spring and fall, and take the agave list at Kramer's Cocktails in the same building instead.18 Whether a given patio is bearable after dark depends on when the sun leaves it, and I have not found that published for any of them.
