Vacancy Brewing
The house pours crisp easy-drinking lagers, and the best seller is Vacancy Classic, an American lager, with June the Hill Country pilsner beside it.4
Why go
The taproom is a small retro-styled room set inside what the Austin Chronicle calls a glorified toll booth, in the St. Elmo warehouse district next to The Yard, and the beer list stays deliberately narrow: crisp lagers and approachable IPAs, with seasonals and small batches for anyone who wants to wander.14 Brent and Sara Watson left the Bay Area in 2018 and spent six months driving, certain only that they wanted to build a brewery, and the motels along Route 66 gave the place its name and its look. They spent two more years planning and renovating through the pandemic and opened the doors on 2 April 2021.4 Good Vibrations Pizza Co. runs a wood-fired trailer out front.
This is a lager house that wants to be a lager house, and the two 2024 medals both landed in exactly the lanes it says it cares about.
Order this / avoid
- Drink: Vacancy Classic, the American lager the house calls its best seller and the beer that took the 2024 Brewers Cup silver.1
- Drink: Sunrise Snorkel, the session IPA that took the second silver, in that category by name.1
- Drink: June, the Hill Country pilsner, which is the other beer the house puts its own name behind.4
- Avoid: arriving expecting a broad or experimental board. The published focus is lagers and approachable IPAs and the Chronicle describes it the same way.
What locals & experts say
- The Austin Chronicle, Eric Puga, 17 October 2024:
this diminutive, retro-styled brewery set inside a glorified toll booth at South Austin's The Yard features an impressive focus on Austin's beer palate: lagers and approachable IPAs.
He scored it 79 points, which put it in Just Missed rather than the ranked top 25.1 - The same rankings a year earlier: the Chronicle put it in the 2023 dropped-from-rankings line, after it sat at 23 the year before. Three editions in, it has not been back inside the top 25.2
- Texas Craft Brewers Cup, 2024, two silvers: the Guild's third annual competition drew 956 beers from 170 breweries. Both medals are reported by the Chronicle rather than read on the Guild's own results sheet, and the Vacancy Classic medal's category is not named at source.
Good to know
- Booking: walk in. It is a taproom, and the pizza trailer out front handles the food.
- One door: the Austin Public Health register holds a single premises under this name, so there is no sibling branch and no score to keep separate.
- Hygiene: Austin Public Health scores the kitchen 95, inspected 13 December 2025. The three-inspection run since August 2023 is 94, 93, 95. Austin scores on a 100-point demerit scale where higher is better and 70 is the failing line, so none of this is a finding. The pizza trailer is a mobile vendor and mobile vendors are not in this dataset at all, so it has no record here either way.5
Verdict
could-visit — The house beer is Vacancy Classic, an American lager and the best seller, with June the Hill Country pilsner and a session IPA called Sunrise Snorkel beside it; the Classic and the Snorkel each took a silver at the 2024 Texas Craft Brewers Cup. The taproom is a small retro room in a converted toll booth in the St. Elmo warehouse district, with a wood-fired pizza trailer out front. Brent and Sara Watson left the Bay Area in 2018, spent six months on the road, and opened here in April 2021 with a stated aim of clean easy-drinking lagers. The Austin Chronicle has kept it outside the ranked top 25 for three editions running, which is the honest ceiling.
