Sour Duck Market
One enormous 5 dollar breakfast taco: scrambled eggs, fries, red chili sauce and queso fresco on a house-made flour tortilla.1
Why go
This is the all-day cafe and bakery from the Odd Duck and Barley Swine team, on a big patio of picnic tables in East Austin.1 Raphael Brion scored it 8.3 for The Infatuation. The dish he singles out is that one taco: five dollars, eggs, fries, red chili sauce and queso fresco, on a tortilla made in house.1 Putting the fries inside the taco is the same starch-and-fat move as a chip butty, which is why it eats as a whole meal. The menu turns over with the season, and a potato hash, a breakfast sandwich, a wagyu cheeseburger and the kid's burger are always there. That last one is a stripped-back smashburger hiding on the children's menu.1
Order this / avoid
- The breakfast taco. Five dollars. Brion calls it one of his favorites in town.1
- Check the pastry case on the way in, kolaches or croissants or cinnamon rolls. Take the savory danish if it is there.1
- The quiet one: the kid's burger, a minimalist smashburger that never made it onto the adult menu.1
What locals & experts say
- Raphael Brion, The Infatuation Austin, 8.3 out of 10:
The enormous singular breakfast taco, one of our favorites in town, is a mere $5, and it is a thing of beauty.
1 - The same outlet lists it in its best bakeries guide, its chocolate chip cookie power ranking, its best happy hours and its where-to-eat-with-your-dog guide.1
Good to know
- The wait, in Brion's account, is never too bad whether you are two people or a rowdy party of twelve.1
- Hygiene: four readings, one dip, recovered. Austin Public Health scored the kitchen 94 on 21 April 2025, 80 on 30 October 2024, and 90 twice before that. The city's failing line is 70, so the 80 is a pass and a below-average one. The line since has gone up.2
Verdict
should-visit — Walk in, and bring the dog.
