Taqueria De Diez (D/10) (West Lynn)
A trompo turns in the window shaving al pastor while the grill finishes slabs of carne asada, at the back of a bar, down an alley.1
Why go
The entrance is an alleyway off Trinity Street behind the bar ReyRey, marked by a disco ball, a few blocks from Dirty Sixth. Nicolai McCrary scored it 7.6 for The Infatuation and put the comparison plainly: The tacos are a step up from just about any you'll find in the busy three-block vicinity.
1 The tortillas are made by hand in flour and corn, which is what carries the whole thing, and the meat comes off the trompo and the grill in front of you.
Order this / avoid
- Order: carne asada, con todo. That is the best meat here by McCrary's account, tender and well seasoned with charred crispy edges, and
con todo
gets it dressed with onions, cilantro, guacamole and salsa.1 Add the volcanes with chicken, a tostada base under juicy meat, which is where the crunch is. - Avoid: the al pastor.
The pork comes straight off the trompo. It's shaved thin and has some great texture, but it's a little underseasoned,
and the guacamole on top is watery and needs salt.1 That is a genuine letdown when the trompo is the first thing you see.
What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation, Nicolai McCrary (page-dated 19 July 2024), 7.6: he describes it as a reverse speakeasy where the alcohol out front fronts for a secret taqueria, and rates the meat as arriving crispy and tender with the handmade tortillas doing the work of holding it.1 The Infatuation files this branch as
Taqueria 10 de 10
and the South Lamar one asTaqueria de Diez,
which are two pages about one operator. - On the volcanes:
We like the volcánes with chicken,
and his reason is that they are juicy and flavorful with the tostada adding crispy texture to each bite. That is the one dish here that gets an unqualified good word.1
Good to know
- Which branch this is, and how that was settled. Taqueria de Diez publishes three open locations: Downtown at 206 Trinity St unit 110, South Lamar at 2110 S Lamar Blvd Suite C, and West Lake Hills at 3736 Bee Caves Rd Suite 2, with Guadalupe Street and The Domain marked coming soon.2 There is no West Lynn branch, and the door here is the downtown alley off Trinity.
- The health record agrees on downtown. Austin Public Health has inspected exactly one kitchen for the brand, at 309 E 3rd Street, which is the alley side of the 206 Trinity block: 89 on 23 February 2026.3
- Hygiene: 89 on the most recent inspection, well clear of the 70 that Austin's ordinance treats as failing, and there is only one inspection on file so there is no trajectory to read.
- Timing: it runs late and takes no bookings.
Verdict
could-visit — Taqueria de Diez cooks Tijuana-style tacos down an alley off Trinity Street, behind the bar ReyRey, with a disco ball marking the door and a trompo turning in the window. The Infatuation scored it 7.6 and the useful line is comparative: these are a step up from just about anything in the busy three blocks around them, which on that stretch of downtown is the bar that matters. Order the carne asada con todo, on the handmade flour tortillas. Skip the al pastor, which the same review calls underseasoned with watery guacamole on top, and that is a real disappointment when the trompo is the first thing you see. It is cheap, it runs late, and it is the best taco within walking distance of Dirty Sixth.
