Veracruz All Natural Food Truck

Alton Brown called the migas here the best breakfast taco he had ever had, back when the kitchen was a converted school bus parked at 1704 East Cesar Chavez.1

Why go

Reyna Vazquez put a trailer on East Cesar Chavez in 2006 selling juices and snow cones, watched the trade die once summer ended, and reworked the whole thing.2 By 2008 she had brought in her sister Maritza and switched to breakfast tacos, cooked on portable hot plates in a trailer with no proper kitchen. One of them slept on the trailer floor while the other worked the plancha.2 They had arrived in Austin in 1999, aged 16 and 19, speaking no English. Their mother had run a taqueria out of the family home in Veracruz selling picadas, empanadas and tostadas, walking or busing to a distant grocery between services.2 Reyna's own account of starting the business is worth quoting straight: There's a lot that goes into opening a business, especially coming from Mexico, being immigrants and women without papers.2 The migas that came out of that trailer are built on crunchy tortilla strips with tomatoes, onion and avocado, and J. Kenji Lopez-Alt wrote them up for Serious Eats in 2013.2

Order this / avoid

  • The migas taco. It is the dish that carried this business from one trailer to eight doors.2
  • Also on the trailer menu: tortas and the house-made juices, which are what the operation started out selling in 2006.1
  • Avoid: driving to East Cesar Chavez for it. That block has belonged to somebody else since 2020.1

What locals & experts say

  • Katie Friel, CultureMap, January 2020, on what this trailer was: Since 2010, Veracruz has parked at 1704 E. Cesar Chavez St., serving a menu of tacos, tortas, and house-made juices. The same piece reports that in 2017 Alton Brown called the migas the best breakfast taco I've ever had.1
  • Chris Hughes, Austin Monthly, August 2020, on where the cooking comes from: the sisters learned it from their mother Reyna, the unflappable personification of the brand, who fed a constant stream of customers out of the family house in Veracruz. Maritza took charge of that kitchen at ten years old while her mother was in hospital.2
  • Three wins in one 2026 poll. They are public votes. Chronicle readers voted Veracruz All Natural best Food Truck, best Breakfast Taco and best Taco in the 2026 Best of Austin Readers Poll. The poll names the business and no address, so none of the three pins to this trailer.5

Good to know

  • Where it went. In January 2020 the sisters moved this original trailer, a converted school bus then being refitted, to Webberville Road beside Fleet Coffee. They promised no gap between closing one pitch and opening the other. The announcement gave 2427 Webberville Road and the company now lists 2505, both on the same short stretch.13
  • Not the same business as the Bib holder. Veracruz Fonda & Bar in Mueller is the family's fixed restaurant and holds a Bib Gourmand. Sabor Veracruz on Tech Ridge is unrelated to any of it.7
  • Hygiene: no inspection record exists for this trailer. Austin's published inspections cover fixed addresses and mobile vendors sit outside them, so neither trailer address returns anything. Six fixed premises carry the family name and score between 79 and 96 across 2023 to 2026, none below the city's failing line. None of those records belongs to a trailer. An absence is never a clean result.6

Verdict

should-visit — Walk up, and go in the morning, because the migas are a breakfast dish. Check where the trailer is before you drive: it has moved once already, and the block it made its name on belongs to somebody else now.
