Err Urban Rustic Thai
Bo Songvisava and Dylan Jones of Bo.lan opened Err in 2015 to cook aharn glam lao, Thai drinking food, with the same organic suppliers and an in-house program that hand-pounds the curry pastes, presses the coconut cream, and ferments its own fish sauce.
Why go
Err is the casual argument of the Bo.lan philosophy: cured, fermented, sun-dried and fried things built for sharing over drinks. Bo's own framing, in Michelin's 2019 profile: "drinking food... it's food to share." The menu runs Isaan-style fermented pork sausage, sun-dried pork jerky with coriander seed, koji-marinated pork belly, and the Chicken Movie, deep-fried chicken skin with house sriracha, at B165 to B285 a plate. Phil Rosenthal ate that chicken skin in the first episode of Somebody Feed Phil in 2018, which is how most of the world found it. One correction to the record: after stints in Tha Tien, at the Bo.lan compound on Sukhumvit 53, in Thonglor, and at Asai Sathorn, the Bangkok room is now ERR 32 on Soi Sukhumvit 32, per the venue's own site.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Chicken Movie with house sriracha, the Isaan sausage, and the pla som, garlic-cured fish that BK Magazine's original review said "has perfect texture (crispy outside, tender flakes inside)." Drink the cocktails and ya dong built on Thai spirits, the "creative cocktails" of Jeff's note.
- Avoid: trusting any address in press coverage older than 2025; every earlier location is closed. BK's 2015 caveat, that some grilled items "lack that requisite smokey, quickly-seared quality," is the one recorded knock on the food, so favor the fried and fermented end of the menu.
What locals & experts say
- Michelin Guide (2019 profile): curry pastes hand-pounded, coconut cream pressed in-house, fish sauce fermented on site, no MSG, and the same organic farmers who supply Bo.lan.2
- BK Magazine (2015): praise for the pla som's texture beside the grill critique; the 2023 retrospective says Err
gained notoriety for their top-quality ingredients and full-bodied Thai tastes.
4 - Time Out Bangkok:
Dishes are simple in presentation but rich in flavor,
at friendlier prices than Bo.lan.5 - Dylan Jones, on accolades (BK, 2020): "These accolades haven't meant much to us for a long time." The early Bib Gourmand era is history the chefs themselves shrug at.
Good to know
- Timing: Thursday to Tuesday, 11am to 11pm (last order 10pm). Closed Wednesday.
- Booking: TableCheck via the venue site, or Line @errbkk; phone +662 622 2292.
- Getting there: Soi Sukhumvit 32, on the south side of Sukhumvit; a ride, or a walk from BTS Thong Lo. A second branch, ERR Bangsaray, runs down the coast in Chon Buri.
- Bo.lan connection: the fine-dining mothership and Bolan Grocer remain on Sukhumvit 53; book each venue separately, they no longer share an address with Err.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: Famous casual place from Bo and Dylan. Somebody feed Phil. Ideal for Thai drinking food and creative cocktails…
Verdict
should-visit — Bo Songvisava and Dylan Jones's drinking-food room applies Bo.lan's supply chain and an in-house preservation program, hand-pounded pastes, house-fermented fish sauce, koji cures, to plates that cost B165 to B285. That combination, a starred-pedigree kitchen doing aharn glam lao at street prices, is the standout axis, and Netflix put it on the map in 2018. The wandering addresses and the lack of a current critical record for the new room keep it off the top rung.
