Sri Trat Restaurant and Bar
Wongwich "Ack" Sripinyo and his wife Nontawan "Taam" Chitwattanagorn opened this Sukhumvit 33 house in 2017 to cook the recipes of Ack's mother, a former Trat beauty queen whose portrait fills a brick wall, and it became the mother ship of Bangkok's only eastern-Thai restaurant family.
Why go
Trat is Thailand's far eastern seaboard, and its kitchen barely travels; 50 Best Discovery says the fiery
menu transports diners to eastern Thailand's coastal province of Trat,
supplied by small producers and fishermen in Rayong, Isaan and beyond who do not usually supply produce to provinces outside their own.
That supply line is the substance: salacca, Siam cardamom, and boat-fresh seafood cooked to home recipes rather than restaurant reductions of them. Michelin holds the room at Bib Gourmand, already on the 2022 list without a new
marker, and the same family later spun off Burapa on Sukhumvit Soi 11.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the lon pu kai crab dip (B540), the stir-fried chicken thigh with Siam cardamom (B190), and the spicy sea bass soup with salacca and shrimp paste (B250), all priced on the venue's own menu; tiger prawns with tamarind (B450) if the table wants a centerpiece.
- Avoid: conflating it with Burapa. This room is the original, all-day and recipe-faithful; Burapa is the sibling with the cocktail floor. Pick by the night you want.
What locals & experts say
- Michelin Guide Thailand (Bib Gourmand): the owners bring Trat province's famed cuisine to Bangkok via their mother's favorite recipes, per the live listing.2
- 50 Best Discovery: the menu
transports diners to eastern Thailand's coastal province of Trat.
1 - Time Out Bangkok (Dec 2021): on the Michelin 2022 Bib Gourmand roster, a holdover rather than a newcomer.3
Good to know
- Timing: daily 11am to 10:30pm, so it covers the lunch gap most Bangkok destination rooms leave open.
- Booking: recommended for dinner; phone +66 2 088 0968.
- Getting there: 90 Soi Sukhumvit 33, a 12 to 15 minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong; sibling Burapa is two BTS stops away off Nana if you want the same larder with a bar attached.
Verdict
should-visit — The origin node of Bangkok's only eastern-Thai family of restaurants: a 2017 room cooking one woman's Trat recipes off a supply line of provincial fishermen and growers who normally sell to no one outside their province, with a Michelin Bib since at least the 2022 list. Trat cooking barely exists in Bangkok outside this group, and the scarcity is regional repertoire rather than hype. Comfortable prices for the polish. Short of must-visit because no critic has pinned a career dish here on the record.
