Saawaan
Saawaan arrived in 2018 with a tasting menu sequenced by technique, courses named Raw, Dip, Stir-Fried and Charcoal, took a Michelin star through four straight guides, then lost both the star (dropped in the 2023 edition) and its founding chef, and now sells the same format at B2,790, the cheapest fine-dining ticket in this database.
Why go
Sujira Aom
Pongmorn, who cut her teeth at Sra Bua, opened the Suan Phlu room in early 2018 and built the menu as a march through Thai technique: courses named Raw, Dip, Stir-Fried, Charcoal (BK Magazine). The 2019 guide starred it, Aom became Thailand's first Michelin Young Chef Award winner (2021 guide), and by 2022 she was gone, replaced that June by Phuket-born Saritwat Earth
Wanvichitkun, ex-Mezzaluna; she now runs her own Khaan near Chidlom. The Michelin Guide still lists the kitchen for a set menu that artistically plays with Thai flavours and cooking techniques including fermenting, steaming, boiling and grilling over charcoal,
minus the star since the 2023 edition.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the set menu is the format; Time Out's current 5/5 listing singles out the fermented blue swimmer crab with mango, the French Charolais beef curry stewed two days in coconut broth, and the black sticky rice dessert by pastry chef Arisara Chongphanitkul.
- Avoid: booking on the badge. Jeff's note predates the 2023 guide; the star ran 2019 through 2022 and has been gone since, which is worth knowing even though the price now reflects it.
What locals & experts say
- BK Magazine (2018):
Rarely do restaurants arrive so fully formed as Saawaan.
1 - Time Out Bangkok (current, 5/5):
Suanphlu's Thai fine dining restaurant offers the perfect blend of authentic local cuisine and a warm, romantic ambiance.
5 - Time Out Bangkok (2022), on the star:
And sadly, Sawaan and Ginza Sushi Ichi were dropped from this year's list.
2 - Michelin Guide (2021 era): Aom Pongmorn, Thailand's first Young Chef Award winner, for the cooking she built here.3
Good to know
- Timing: dinner; the venue's booking page says daily from 5:30pm, Time Out says Wed-Mon 6pm-10:30pm, so trust the TableCheck calendar.
- Booking: recommended via TableCheck; far easier to get into than the starred rooms in this batch.
- Budget: B2,790 per Time Out's listing, roughly a third of Sorn and under half of Potong.
- Getting there: Soi Suan Phlu off Sathorn Road, about 2km from the Surawong base; a short ride.
Verdict
could-visit — A once-starred kitchen that kept the format (courses sequenced by technique, fermentation to charcoal) but lost its star in the 2023 guide and its founding chef to her own Khaan. At B2,790 it undercuts every starred tasting in town by a third or more, and Time Out still rates the current room 5/5, so the craft-per-baht math holds. But nothing here is unduplicable now, and the chef who made it famous cooks two districts away, so it lands as the value play on this list rather than the detour.
