Saengchai Phochana
When Bangkok's kitchens close, this 40-year-old Thai-Chinese diner between Sukhumvit Soi 32 and 34 is still ladling salted-plum soup at 3am, and a London chef with a Michelin-going Thai kitchen lists it among his seven Bangkok essentials.
Why go
Time Out's summary has held since 2017: "Sukhumvit's favorite Chinese-style diner has been a favorite khao tom destination for odd-hour eating for years, thanks to its marvelous Thai-Chinese comfort dishes that go perfectly with plain rice congee." The dish with a cult is gaeng jued gium buay, salted plum soup with minced pork, which BK Magazine says can "bring you straight back to life" at B120. Sirichai Kularbwong of London's Singburi orders the same soup and names the detail a cook would: "the intestine gives it nuance." The shop has held its two shophouses for over 30 years by BK's 2014 count.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the salted plum soup first, then khao tom with stewed pork intestines (B100 at BK's citation), deep-fried minced pork with salted fish, and the curry-powder blue crab if the table is splitting it.
- Avoid: early-evening plans and squeamishness about the room. BK's one recorded criticism is hygiene; the cooking is the reason everyone returns anyway.
What locals & experts say
- Time Out Bangkok (Aug 2017, 4/5):
marvelous Thai-Chinese comfort dishes that go perfectly with plain rice congee.
1 - BK Magazine (Oct 2014):
rooted to the same spot for over 30 years
;the only real downside to Saengchai Pochana is hygiene, both in the kitchen and the dining room.
2 - Something Curated (Nov 2023, Sirichai Kularbwong): on the plum soup,
the intestine gives it nuance.

Good to know
- Timing: evening until deep night: Time Out (2017) lists 4pm-4am, the venue's own page says 6pm-3am. Either way it covers the hours nothing else does; confirm before a 3am run.
- Booking: walk-in; air-conditioned room inside, street-side tables out front, groups absorbed easily.
- Getting there: Sukhumvit Road between Soi 32 and 34, a short walk from BTS Thong Lo.

Verdict
could-visit — Sukhumvit's reference late-night khao tom house for four decades, endorsed in 2023 by Singburi's Sirichai Kularbwong, with a salted-plum soup that both BK and a working chef treat as the point of the visit. It is the answer to a specific question, where to eat well at 2am between Thong Lo and Phrom Phong, and on that axis it has no local rival; outside that window it is a solid diner with dated prices and a quoted hygiene caveat.
