Khao San Sek
Pichaya "Pam" Soontornyanakij, named World's Best Female Chef 2025 by The World's 50 Best Restaurants, opened this 70-year-old Song Wat shophouse as the casual counterweight to her starred Potong, building the whole menu on five ingredients: rice, chili, coconut, fish sauce, and palm sugar.
Why go
The name means sacred milled rice, and the kitchen takes it literally with a khao pracham wan, a daily rice that changes every day, anchoring a build-your-own menu offered in three portion sizes per the Michelin Guide listing. Time Out's Joe Cummings calls it a love letter to Bangkok,
a room looser and funkier than Potong, with former Potong sous chef Grace Worakan Kritsirikul running service under a three-story JecksBKK mural. Top Tables 2026 ranked it No.20 in the city and handed it both Best New Restaurant and Best New Restaurant Design.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the nine-course set at B1,800 with the B500 sato pairing, or go a la carte for the crispy coconut taco with Suratthani oyster and the six-hour smoked beef tongue satay with house pickles, the two plates Time Out leads with; the southern-style rice salad with mackerel and sour mango shows the rice thesis best.
- Avoid: navigating to Khao San Road. Wrong side of Old Town; this is Song Wat, in Chinatown's warehouse row.

Verdict
should-visit — The World's Best Female Chef 2025 cooking her cheapest, loosest room: five foundational Thai ingredients, a daily rice, smoked beef tongue satay, and a sato rice-wine pairing at B500, all inside a 70-year-old Song Wat shophouse muraled three stories high. Top Tables called it the city's Best New Restaurant for 2026 and Michelin listed it within a year. It is the highest-access point into a two-restaurant empire whose flagship needs a long-lead booking, and Song Wat is the neighborhood to be eating in right now.
