False Idol Brewing
False Idol aged Perpetual Contortion, an English barleywine at fourteen percent, for fifteen months in Ironroot whiskey barrels, with 903 Brewers and Vector Brewing in on the brew.1
Why go
Dominique Van Ausdall started releasing beer in 2019 and opened the brick-and-mortar in 2020, which Hop Culture notes was a hard year to open one.1 The two beers that are always on are a Mexican lager called Viva Los Vaqueros and a hefeweizen called Fenris Park.1 The reason to drive to North Richland Hills is the other half of the board, and specifically the barrel programme: the barleywine took notes of panettone, sweet cherry and sticky toffee pudding off a year and a quarter in whiskey wood, and Hop Culture named it to its best beers of 2023.1 The barrels came from Ironroot Republic in Denison.1
Order this / avoid
- Ask what is in barrels. That is the programme worth the drive, and Perpetual Contortion was a one-off release rather than a fixture.1
- Order the rotating taps over the core two. Grace Lee-Weitz:
don't sleep on their rotating hitters.
1 - Order Viva Los Vaqueros or Fenris Park if you want the house style.1
What locals & experts say
- Hop Culture, Grace Lee-Weitz, 2025, on the barleywine:
Everything harmoniously melded together into a confounding sip that we wanted to explore more and more each time we set down the glass.
1 - Hop Culture on what it did to their drinking:
Perpetual Contortion might have been our gateway barleywine.
1 - Hop Culture on where the brewery is going:
We're keeping our eye on what this reasonably new brewery does next.

Good to know
Verdict
could-visit — A small Mid-Cities brewery running a real barrel programme: an English barleywine at fourteen percent, fifteen months in Ironroot whiskey barrels, brewed with two other Texas breweries. Go when Perpetual Contortion or its successor is pouring; the rest of the board is a Mexican lager and a hefeweizen.
