Central Cafe
It trades in the corner unit under the Hielanman's Umbrella, the glass-walled railway bridge carrying Central Station's platforms over Argyle Street, where Highlanders who arrived in the city after the Clearances used to meet and keep out of the rain (Central Cafe).
Why go
It opened on 26 June 2024 with a late licence, which is the detail that makes it more than a commuter coffee stop: it pours cocktails until 10pm on Friday and Saturday and opens at 7am on weekdays (GlasgowWorld). The sandwiches are built on sourdough the cafe bakes itself and the menu is organized around train stations around the world, which is either a good conceit or a wallpaper pattern depending on how the bread is that day. The fitout was drawn from British transport design, in their words the textures, colours, and patterns found in UK transport,
with the Glasgow subway as a reference point, and there is a rack of vinyl that customers pick from. Two years in, nobody has published a review, so nothing here vouches for the cooking.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a sandwich on their own sourdough, which is the only thing on the menu with a craft claim attached, and a coffee before a train. In the evening it is a cocktail under the tracks, which is a strange and pleasant thing to do in a station.
- Avoid: arriving expecting fish and chips. There is a separate, older Central Cafe on the Saltmarket that is a sit-in chippie, and the two get confused constantly. There is also no evening food menu published, so do not plan dinner here.
What locals & experts say
- Liam Smillie, GlasgowWorld (27 June 2024): a
retro transport themed café
witha late license, so can stay open in the evenings and serve alcohol - like cocktails,
on the corner unit under the Hielanman's Umbrella.1 - The cafe on its own interior, quoted in the same report:
Our interior was directly inspired by the textures, colours, and patterns found in UK transport. Our wonderful underground, which is the 3rd oldest in the world, was a perfect piece of inspiration as well as the very trains you'll find above the cafe.
1 - No critic, chef or award coverage exists. Discovery found nothing beyond the opening report in two years of trading, and no page reached names an operator or a head chef.
- Food hygiene: Pass, inspected 1 December 2025, the most recent inspection of any venue in this batch3.
Good to know
- Timing: Monday to Thursday 7am to 7pm, Friday 7am to 10pm, Saturday 8am to 10pm, Sunday 8am to 7pm.

- Getting there: the corner of Argyle Street and Hope Street, in the Central Station structure. You are standing under the platforms.
Verdict
listed — Central Cafe sits in the corner unit of the Hielanman's Umbrella, the glass-walled railway bridge over Argyle Street where Highlanders who came to Glasgow after the Clearances used to meet out of the rain. It opened in June 2024 doing sandwiches on its own sourdough, pastries, coffee and, under a late licence, cocktails until 10 on Friday and Saturday, with a rack of vinyl you pick from yourself. Nobody has reviewed it in two years, no operator is named, and there is no evidence of ambition beyond a well-sited commuter cafe. Worth knowing it exists if you are killing 40 minutes before a train.
