Laboratorio Espresso
A La Marzocco Linea Classic at the foot of an office block on West Nile Street, pulling shots from a lineup of European roasters that changes with the season.
Why go
The room opened in 2013 and the city's own coffee trail credits it with setting the bar for independent coffee in Glasgow (Experience Glasgow Trails). The buying is the craft here. DAK is the house roaster at the moment and the guide notes it changes seasonally
, with NOMAD, Bonanza and The Barn among the others that have come through; Sprudge adds Five Elephant from Berlin and Union Hand-Roasted from London to the rotation. The stated aim is Milanese espresso culture, which explains a compact space in concrete and wood paneling where the best seats are stools at the window. There is outdoor seating for the days Glasgow allows it. The focus is coffee and nothing else, and the staff will tell you where else to drink it in the city if you ask.
Order this / avoid
- Order: an espresso at the counter, then a macchiato on a window stool. Ask what is on this season rather than what is usual.
- Avoid: coming hungry, and coming expecting a room to work in. It shuts at half five.
What locals & experts say
- Sprudge, in its Glasgow city guide, on the buying and the kit:
Their La Marzocco Linea Classic pumps out espresso from a rotating lineup of Europe's best roasters, including the Barn and Five Elephant from Berlin and London's Union Hand-Roasted Coffee. Laboratorio takes great care in choosing its collaborators, ensuring that customers get to sample only the best in-season coffees.
1 - The same guide on the room:
A stylish, award-winning cafe design matched with a commitment to showcasing outstanding roasters from all over Europe, Laboratorio exudes sophistication in its aim to bring Milanese espresso culture to the people of Scotland.
1 - Experience Glasgow Trails, filing it under where the city's best baristas drink:
Laboratorio Espresso set the bar for Glasgow's independent coffee scene when it opened in 2013 in a small, architect designed, award winning space in the centre of the city.
2 - No Glasgow byline found. Thirteen years in, no bylined piece by a Glasgow food or coffee writer about this cafe surfaced on 30 July 2026, and it does not appear in the Independent Coffee Guide coverage that Glasgowist reported on. The evidence here is specialist coffee press and a city trail guide.
Good to know
- Where: 93 West Nile Street, around the corner from Queen Street station.
- Timing: 8am to 5.30pm on weekdays, 9am Saturday, 10.30am Sunday, closing at half five every day.
- Booking: walk-in. A couple of tables, window stools, outdoor seats.
- Hygiene, and read this before you go: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme records Improvement Required at this address, rating date 28 April 2022, with no new rating pending as at 30 July 2026. Improvement Required is the failing tier of the Scottish scheme. The finding is over four years old with no re-inspection recorded, which makes it weak evidence in either direction rather than a current verdict, and it is disclosed here rather than left off. The council reference is FHRSID 594126, business ID 13/00812/COM.4
- Channels: the venue's own domain redirects to its Tumblr, and the day-to-day posting is on Instagram at @labespr.
Verdict
should-visit — This is where Glasgow specialty coffee started taking itself seriously, and thirteen years on the buying is still the reason to go. Sprudge describes a La Marzocco Linea Classic pulling shots from a rotating lineup of Europe's best roasters, and the city's own coffee trail names DAK as the current house choice with the caveat that it changes seasonally, alongside NOMAD, Bonanza and The Barn. Roaster rotation is the craft axis for a coffee bar, and this one has moved through Berlin, Amsterdam and London roasteries while keeping the same small concrete room at the foot of an office block on West Nile Street. The stated intent is Milanese, which is why the window stools work better than the tables. One thing has to travel with the recommendation: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme has recorded Improvement Required at this address since April 2022 and there is no re-inspection on the register. That is old enough to be incomplete data rather than a current verdict, so the room stays recommendable, and it also means this is not where a visitor's first three stops should go.
