Peacock's Ice Cream
The flavor called Gold, caramelized white chocolate ice cream with pistachio cream, pistachios and crunchy feuilletine, took one star at the Great Taste Awards in 2023 (Taste the Place).
Why go
Jennifer Clapp is Canadian, came to Glasgow on a university exchange in 1999, moved back for good in 2006, and started selling small batches of ice cream out of her flat in 2020. The style she makes is the argument: American rather than Italian, made with more than double the amount of cream you might find in gelato,
with inclusions stirred through by hand, caramel ribbons and cookie dough and fruit swirls (Peacock's). The dairy is Scottish and family-run, the chocolate French, the lemons Amalfi. The scoop shop on Battlefield Road opened in late August 2024, four years after the flat-kitchen start, and before that you found the tubs in BAM or at the Cessnock outlet (Glasgow Foodie, Aug 2024).
Order this / avoid
- Order: Gold, for the award and because caramelized white chocolate with feuilletine is a pastry-kitchen build rather than a scoop-shop one. Then Canadian Campfire,
toasted marshmallow ice cream with dark Belgian chocolate chunks and graham cracker pieces
2. Take a handmade cone, and check the weekly special before you commit. - Avoid: turning up Monday or Tuesday, when the shop is closed. If you want something light after dinner, this is the wrong shop; the whole point is the cream.
What locals & experts say
- Emma Mykytyn, Glasgow Foodie (30 August 2024): on the campfire tub,
It really does taste like smores off a campfire.
She also drank a melon float built on Japanese melon Fanta, and put the vegan share atabout half, we think.
2 - Great Taste Awards 2023 (Guild of Fine Food): one star for Gold. The venue's own copy says only
award-winning,
so the star, the year and the flavor come from the Taste the Place profile.1 - Jennifer Clapp, in her own words:
Eating great ice cream is a way to enjoy life in the moment. Your problems cease to exist, at least for a few minutes! That's what we hope to provide.
1 - No critic has reviewed it. Discovery turned up no Glasgowist, Herald, Glasgow Times, Scotsman or List coverage, and the shop's own homepage reposts Google reviews.
Good to know
- Timing: Wednesday to Saturday 12:00 to 20:00, Sunday 12:00 to 18:00, closed Monday and Tuesday.
- Booking: none, it is a counter. Tubs to take away, plus Canadian coffee and chocolate brands on the shelves.
- Hygiene: Pass, inspected 11 August 20254.
- Getting there: 62 Battlefield Road, a short walk from the southeast corner of Queen's Park, which makes it the obvious end point of a park walk rather than a destination in itself.
Verdict
could-visit — A one-woman operation that started in a flat during 2020 lockdown and now runs a Battlefield Road scoop shop, with a Great Taste one-star flavor to its name: Gold, caramelized white chocolate with pistachio cream, pistachio and feuilletine. The style is the point, high-cream American ice cream with housemade inclusions rather than gelato, made with Scottish dairy. It stays at could-visit because one Great Taste star is an entry rung of that programme, no critic has written about the shop, and it opens only Wednesday to Sunday. Worth a stop if you are walking Queen's Park or eating your way along the Southside.
