Fonda San Miguel
Tom Gilliland and the late Miguel Ravago opened this room in 1975 to cook Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz and Yucatan rather than Tex-Mex.1 The shredded duck enchiladas come under a poblano spinach sauce, and The Infatuation hangs the city's history on that plate.2
Why go
Austin Monthly left this room off the city's essential Tex-Mex list and stopped to explain why, as it serves interior Mexican cuisine.
5 Matthew Odam dates the whole modern Mexican movement here to this door, writing that Suerte kicked down the door imagined by Fonda San Miguel in the '70s and pushed open by La Condesa 30 years later
.3 Fifty years on, Eater still has it among the thirty-eight essential rooms in the city.1
Order this / avoid
- The shredded duck enchiladas, topped with poblano spinach sauce.2
- The mole, which McCrary calls some of the best in Austin.6
- Cochinita pibil, soft tender pork you scoop onto warm thin tortillas yourself.6
- The chile rellenos, which come as a spread rather than a plate, and the wagyu steak tacos.1
- To drink: the Silver Coin margarita, refreshing and still packing a punch, and Chronicle readers made this room a 2026 finalist for the city's best margarita. Order it before the mole, since a sweet, bitter and earthy sauce flattens anything sugary that follows.64
- To close: tres leches, not overly sweet, with a bright mango sorbet alongside.6
- Avoid: the queso fundido.6
What locals & experts say

. He is equally plain on the other side:But some things, like the queso fundido, can be fairly bland and lackluster.
6 - Eater keeps it on the essential thirty-eight and tells you what you are paying for:

Good to know
- The same family runs a breakfast room now. Tzintzuntzan, from this team, opened around the corner in February 2026 for breakfast and lunch, with enfrijoladas, chilaquiles and chocoflan, and a to-go window for coffee and pastries.9
- Book it. This is a dining room and not a counter, and the venue publishes no walk-in policy.7
- Austin Public Health scored the kitchen 79 on 21 January 2026, then 94 on 18 March 2025 and 79 on 7 February 2024, on a scale where anything below 70 fails.8
Verdict
should-visit — Book a table. Order the mole first and let everything else answer to it.
