Hokkaisan Japanese Deli Sushi
Sushi and bento anchor the counter, from California rolls and tuna nigiri to chicken teriyaki bowls and gyudon over rice.3
Why go
This is a Japanese grocery first and a deli second, on Congress Avenue, with pantry staples on the shelves and hot and cold prepared food at the counter.3 The Infatuation's Nicolai McCrary did not rate it, which is The Infatuation's standing rule for shops where you cannot sit down to a full meal, and he was direct about where the food lands: the food falls somewhere between a casual neighborhood restaurant and what you'd get from the Sushi-Ya counter at H-E-B
.3 His argument for it is Downtown arithmetic rather than cooking, since the neighborhood offers almost nothing else that is fast, cheap and not fried.3
Order this / avoid
- Order: a bento or a roll off the case, and shop the aisles while you are in, which is where the green tea Kit Kats live.3
- Avoid: planning a sushi meal around it. The one published judgment puts the fish below a dedicated counter, and Austin has plenty of those.
What locals & experts say
- The same reviewer on the sushi itself, from his 6.5 review of the sibling AYCE room, verbatim:
The sushi is roughly what you'd get at the Downtown grocery store—good for a quick lunch at your desk, but underwhelming for a dedicated night out.
That sentence is a judgment on this counter's fish, delivered while writing about another address.2 - The Infatuation Austin, Nicolai McCrary, 30 September 2025, unrated:
the food falls somewhere between a casual neighborhood restaurant and what you'd get from the Sushi-Ya counter at H-E-B
.3 - The same review, on why it still earns a stop:
considering how sparse Downtown Austin is when it comes to relatively healthy, fast lunches, we'll take it as a tiny victory.

Good to know
- Format: mostly grab and go. There is a small seating area outside facing Congress Avenue and that is the whole of it.3
- It opened in August 2025 into the two-story room Royal Blue Grocery had held since 2009, and you can order online at hokkaisan.com.1
- There is a sit-down sibling and it is not this. Hokkaisan All You Can Eat Sushi at 13701 N US 183 in Anderson Mill takes an Infatuation 6.5 and charges about US$45 for lunch or dinner.2 That price belongs to that room.
- Hygiene: no public score exists under this name. The register holds a Michi Japanese Deli & Sushi at the same door, scored 84 on 12 May 2026, and that is a different trading name whose score is not transferred here.4
- Price: nobody publishes one for this counter.
Verdict
listed — Hokkaisan works as a Japanese grocery and deli on Congress Avenue, and its prepared counter is genuinely useful at lunch and genuinely ordinary as sushi. The Infatuation declined to rate it and placed the food between a casual neighborhood restaurant and a supermarket sushi case, which is the whole verdict. It stays listed because nothing about the cooking asks for a trip, and it earns its row because Downtown Austin has very little of this.
