Musashino Sushi Dokoro
Edomae nigiri with slices of fish big enough to hang off both ends of the rice.1
Why go
It is on the second floor of an office building a few blocks from UT, between a law firm and a dental office, and it has been a cornerstone of Japanese dining in Austin since the early 1990s.1 A lot of the city's sushi chefs started here, and the alumni list runs to Uchi and Fukumoto.1 The nigiri is deliberately plain: rice packed denser than The Infatuation's Nicolai McCrary likes, seasoned well, under massive slices of high quality fish.1 He scored it 8.1 and calls the pricing reasonable for the quality.1 The fish is broken down in an open kitchen in front of you.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: vegetable tempura to start. Light, delicate, crisp, and a wide enough spread to keep each bite different.1
- Then: the Sushi Deluxe, seven pieces of daily chef's choice with miso soup. The reviewer's line is that it is basically a miniature omakase at the best price-to-quality point on the menu.1
- Avoid: expecting anything from the salad in that set.1
What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation Austin, Nicolai McCrary, 8.1 out of 10:
It's classic and reliable, and it's a place we hope never changes.
Recorded as a rating, never as an award.1 - Listed in two of The Infatuation's Austin guides: best sushi omakases and best sushi restaurants. Listings, not scored verdicts.1
Good to know
- Hygiene: a failing inspection on the record, and it is disclosed. Austin Public Health scored the kitchen 58 on 15 January 2026, and the register's own name Musashino Sushi Dokoro at 2905 San Gabriel St Ste 200. Austin runs a 100-point demerit scale where higher is better, and the City's own inspection form sets 70 as the failing threshold. A 58 is a failing score. It is above 50, so the 48-hour closure rule was not triggered.2
- What happened next, and what did not. The next inspection on 10 February 2026 came back 75. That is a pass and it is not a second finding. The reading before both was 84, on 4 April 2024. So the trajectory is 84, then 58, then 75. Only one score in the file is below 70, so the compliance ladder's two-strikes-in-36-months escalation has not been reached.2
- How rare that is. Only 89 of the 20,964 inspections in Austin's register score below 70, which is 0.42 percent. A failing score here is an unusual result, which is why it is worth knowing before you book.2
Verdict
should-visit — Thirty-odd years of Edomae in an office building, an alumni list that runs to Uchi and Fukumoto, and an 8.1 from The Infatuation for nigiri that is deliberately unfashionable: big slices of good fish on well-seasoned rice, no garnish argument. It stays off the top rung for one reason and it is not the food. Austin Public Health scored the premises 58 in January 2026, a failing result on the city's own threshold, cleared at 75 four weeks later. That travels with the recommendation.
