TEP BAR - Cultural Bar of Thailand
Asawin Rojmethatawee left a corporate job in Singapore, took over a former rice warehouse on Chinatown's Soi Nana, and opened Tep Bar in 2015 to do for Thai liquor what Japan did for sake. Ya dong, the herbal infusions Bangkok normally drinks at sidewalk stalls, comes here in flights, and five house ensembles cover live traditional Thai music seven nights a week.
Why go
About 80% of the list builds on Thai liquor and rum, with bases of pineapple, sugarcane, rice wine and sticky rice sourced from local farmers (Hive Life). BK Magazine's review sets the scene: "This restored shop-house offers up a distinctly modern update on Thai culture," with "potent cocktails mixed with Thai fruits, herbs and spices, plus a good line of home-infused ya dong (Thai herbal whiskey)." The music is a program, a house roster that grew from one band at opening to five, so the night you pick decides what you hear: piphat led by Thai xylophone on Thursdays and Sundays, contemporary Isan on Tuesdays, a folk string trio on Fridays (venue site).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the ya dong set of three house infusions, poured under names like Pra Apaimanee and Phaya Suea Khrong (Coconuts Bangkok). From the cocktails, the Thong, which 50 Best Discovery describes as Mekong rum with
mango, wild honey, dill, lime and gold leaf,
or one of the four elemental drinks in the Phraya rum section. Eat from the Thai tapas side: moo sarong-style pork balls and grilled beef wrapped in pandan leaves. - Avoid: turning up on a live-music night without a reservation. Jeff's trip research has music seats deposit-gated through TableCheck; book ahead and confirm the terms when you do.

just feet away from the musicians.

The journey to get to Tep bar should be an experience in itself.

Good to know
- Timing: evenings to around midnight, later on weekends; the ensemble schedule on the venue site tells you which band plays which night. Re-confirm hours on Instagram, the published ones date to the 2015 review.
- Booking: via TableCheck. Expect roughly $12 a cocktail (50 Best Discovery); the ya dong set ran B350 when Coconuts reviewed it.
- Getting there: Soi Nana off Maitri Chit Road, five minutes from MRT Hua Lamphong. Asia Today and Teens of Thailand sit on the same strip, so one booking sets up a full Chinatown bar night.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "fun bar; multiple recs"
Verdict
should-visit — A bar built as an argument that Thai liquor deserves the sake treatment, with house-infused ya dong flights and a rotation of five traditional ensembles playing feet from the tables every night. The craft ceiling is below the city's 50 Best rooms, but nothing else in Bangkok combines the drink program and the music, and it anchors a Chinatown night with Asia Today and Teens of Thailand on the same soi.
