Deanston Bakery
In March 2022 Yuriy Kachak put borscht and empire biscuits iced blue and yellow on the counter of his Shawlands bakery, and hundreds of people queued down Deanston Drive to buy them for Ukraine.
Why go
Kachak is Ukrainian, had lived in Scotland for almost twenty years by then, and had been running this bakery for four (STV News). Dozens of local businesses sent baked goods, drinks and raffle prizes to that Sunday sale, and the total passed GBP 25,000. The queue was already the shop's normal condition. Sourdough loaves and bagels go early enough that Hidden Scotland describes people lining "around the street" for them, and GlasgowWorld named it one of the twelve bakeries worth your time in the city in January 2026. There is no website, which tells you what kind of operation this is.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a sourdough loaf, a bag of bagels, and a cinnamon bun to eat before you get home.
- Avoid: the afternoon, and any plan that depends on a particular loaf still being there.
What locals & experts say
- GlasgowWorld, in its January 2026 roundup of the city's twelve best bakeries, placing it fourth: "Baking with an incredible cause. Ukranian owner Yuriy Kachak raised £25,000 to support his home country. The Shawlands bakery's baking stands on its own though." ref
- Yuriy Kachak to STV News, March 2022, on why he ran the sale: "I thought one or two local businesses would join us but loads joined and the support was overwhelming." Also: "Baking always gets people together and at a time like this it's for a great cause." ref
- Hidden Scotland, on the standing rather than the technique: an artisanal bakery that "is something of a local hero", with sourdough loaves and bagels "which people queue around the street to get their hands on". ref
- No critic has reviewed the baking. The Glasgow Times, The Herald, The Skinny, Glasgowist and The List were searched by name on 30 July 2026 and none carries a piece on this bakery. What holds the entry up is a queue, a listing and an owner on the record.
Jeff's take (his words)
Nothing. The row carries no note of his own, and the text on the master list came from an enrichment pass rather than from him.
Good to know
- Where: 167 Deanston Drive, a side street off Pollokshaws Road in Shawlands, about eight minutes' walk from Ranjit's Kitchen.
- Timing: morning. The bread and bagels sell out.
- Booking: walk-in, and expect to stand in line.
- Channels: no website. Facebook and Instagram are where the bakery posts, so check those for the day's bake.
- Access: Hidden Scotland's directory panel lists dog friendly and disabled access. That is a listing field rather than the bakery's own statement, so treat it as a lead.
- Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme records a Pass, rating date 5 February 2025. Pass is the clean result in the Scottish scheme. ref
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
could-visit — A neighborhood sourdough bakery on a Shawlands side street with a queue down the pavement, which is the market's own verdict when nobody has published one. Yuriy Kachak has baked here since around 2018, and in March 2022 he turned a Sunday bake sale into a relief fund for Ukraine that ran past GBP 25,000, with borscht on the counter and empire biscuits iced blue and yellow. GlasgowWorld put the shop in its twelve best city bakeries for 2026 and made the point that the baking stands up on its own. Weighing craft first, that is where the evidence thins: nobody has written about the bread, no flour or ferment is on record, and the only technical claim available is that it sells out. Go if you are on that side of Pollokshaws Road in the morning, take a loaf and a cinnamon bun, and pair it with Ranjit's Kitchen eight minutes east.
