Henry's
A man who owns two bars in this city told Glasgow's industry guide that this one is the best new bar in it, and nobody has published anything about it since.
Why go
Fergus McVicar and the team behind Chinaskis and The Berkeley Suite opened it on 29 December 2023 on Abbot Street, and named it for Henry Chinaski, the alter ego Charles Bukowski wrote himself as (DRAM). The brief was the "vibe of Chinaskis" in a room with its own look. It runs as two venues in one day: specialty coffee, bagels, soups and pastries while it is light, then cocktails, wine, cheese plates and small plates once it is not. Dogs are welcome and the beer garden is underground. The reason it is on this list is Joshua Barr, who runs The Locale and West Side Tavern and told the city's industry guide that the drinks programme here is amazing (The Glasgow Wrap). Take that seriously and take it as one voice, because two and a half years on it is still the only assessment anyone has published.
Order this / avoid
- Order: from the small plates, where the cod with koji miso is the one that sounds like a kitchen rather than a bar snack, with olives and focaccia early and scampi fries later. Cheese and a glass of wine is the house pairing the opening notes described.
- Avoid: treating it as dinner, and picturing a garden. The yard is underground, and the plan to double it was announced in January 2024 without any confirmation since.
What locals & experts say
- Joshua Barr, owner of The Locale and West Side Tavern, in Glasgow's industry guide: "Henry's in the Southside is the best new bar in the city, the interior is too cool and their drinks programme is amazing." ref
- DRAM Scotland, January 2024, reporting the opening rather than judging it: the bar comes "from Fergus Mcvicar and the team behind Chinaskis and The Berkeley Suite", is "Dedicated to Henry Chinaski, the literary alter ego of Charles Bukowski", and has an underground beer garden "that will double in size come summertime." ref
- Nothing else exists. No approved Glasgow or Scottish title has published on this bar since the opening week. Two search passes returned video platforms, aggregators and one unregistered food blog. One industry pick is carrying this entry, and that is stated rather than dressed up.
Good to know
- Where: 5 Abbot Street, off the Shawlands end of Pollokshaws Road.
- Timing: it trades from morning as a coffee room and turns into a bar in the evening. Exact hours are published nowhere we can read, so check the pin.
- Booking: walk in. No booking policy is on record.
- Outside: the beer garden is below ground, which makes it a different proposition from a street terrace.
- Dogs: welcome.
- Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme records a Pass, rating date 4 November 2025. Pass is the clean result in the Scottish scheme and the inspection is recent. ref
- Not to be confused with Henry Healys on Queen Street, a different business with a similar name and its own record.
- Provenance: added by curation on 30 July 2026 from the chef-vote pass. One industry vote, not the two the brief expected.
Jeff's take (his words)
Nothing here is Jeff's. The bar is not on his saved list and he has written no note on it, so no opinion is attributed to him.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
could-visit — Go if you are drinking in Shawlands, and treat the recommendation as one man's word, because that is what it is. Joshua Barr, who owns The Locale and West Side Tavern, told Glasgow's industry guide that 'Henry's in the Southside is the best new bar in the city, the interior is too cool and their drinks programme is amazing'. A working bar owner praising a competitor's drinks programme is the most expensive compliment in hospitality, and it is the strongest single line anyone has written about this room. It is also the only one. Henry's came from Fergus McVicar and the team behind Chinaskis and The Berkeley Suite, opened on 29 December 2023, took its name from Henry Chinaski, and runs coffee and pastries by day into cocktails, wine and small plates at night, with an underground beer garden and a dog-friendly door. Beyond the opening announcement in DRAM, no approved title has published anything about it in two and a half years, the venue has no website, and no menu, competition result or named bartender backs the drinks claim up. Food and drink come first, so a room whose glass nobody has described stays at could-visit. This is the best upside on the list: one corroborating source and it moves.
