Jeju Baked Goods
Ameena Ijiji named the bakery for her sister Khodeja, who lived with severe disabilities and was known in the family as Jeju; Khodeja died suddenly in December 2016, and baking bread is what Ameena did with the grief (Taste the Place).
Why go
Ameena went to art school, then found bread at The School of Artisan Food in 2016, and the bakery on Victoria Road is the result: small-batch sourdough, French pastry, and a bi-colored pain au chocolat that took seven months to perfect. That last one is not a small claim. A bi-colored laminated pastry means a second, tinted dough laminated into the first, and getting two doughs to proof and bake at the same rate without tearing the pattern is a genuinely hard piece of work. Her husband and co-owner Kamal makes the pastries, the coffee and the Moroccan mint tea. In October 2024 the bakery's croissant went into Scotland's Best Croissant at The Balmoral in Edinburgh, in a field judged by, among others, Darcie Maher of Lannan Bakery and the executive pastry chef of the hotel (Homes & Interiors Scotland). Maple Leaf Bakery won it.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the bi-colored pain au chocolat, for the reason above. Add a croissant, since that is the pastry they compete with. If you want lunch, the 'Green Goat' sandwich is creamed potato, sauteed onions, pesto and goat's cheese1. Kamal's Moroccan mint tea instead of a second coffee.
- Avoid: arriving after about 2pm. Their own line is that it is rare to find anything left by mid-afternoon, and the shutters come down at 4. Tuesday and Wednesday are closed.
What locals & experts say
- Ameena Ijiji, co-owner, on why the bakery exists:
The amount of care and love that they showed Khodeja has been incomparable. Opening Jeju Baked Goods was just a small way for us to say a big thank you.
1 - Mairi Mulhern, Homes & Interiors Scotland (29 October 2024): the Scotland's Best Croissant field
included renowned entrants from across Scotland such as Jeju Baked Goods, The Culinary Kiwi Bird, Kaf Coffee, Dune Bakery, The Palmerston, Station House Bakery and many more,
with entriescarefully assessed based on shape, colour, pastry development, texture and taste.
2 - Isigny Sainte-Mere, The Best Croissant UK 2024 Awards: finalist, and the only Scottish bakery in the field. That comes from the bakery's own profile rather than the awards body, so treat it as their claim until someone confirms it.1
- No critic has reviewed it, and the "Real Bread Ambassador" line that circulates online is not on the bakery's own site, which carries no award or sourdough claims at all.
- Food hygiene: Pass, inspected 28 March 20254.
Good to know
- Timing: Thursday to Monday, 9am to 4pm. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and effectively sold out well before closing.
- Booking: none, walk in. Surplus at the end of the day goes to Al-Khair, a local charity working with low-income families.
- Getting there: 393 Victoria Road, Govanhill, a few minutes from Queen's Park and the Victoria Road strip, about two miles south of the city centre.
Verdict
could-visit — A Govanhill bakery named for Ameena Ijiji's late sister, run with her husband Kamal, doing small-batch sourdough and French pastry five days a week. The craft claim is real and specific: a bi-colored pain au chocolat they spent seven months getting right, and a croissant good enough to be entered against Scotland's best at the Balmoral in October 2024 in a field judged by Lannan's Darcie Maher. It sits at could-visit only because the marquee accolade, sole Scottish finalist in Isigny Sainte-Mere's Best Croissant UK 2024, is the operators' own claim, and no critic has reviewed the place. Pin the placing down and it moves up. Go before noon, because it empties.
