What Paris is

Book a bistro. Cooks who trained in Paris's grand kitchens carried what they learned into small rooms, with a board of the day's dishes and a list of natural wine. The city's own chefs eat in those rooms. Book the best of them weeks ahead. Eat lunch where you can, because lunch is the cheapest way into the best kitchens, and plan around Sunday, when most of them shut. The grand rooms changed too.

Septime★

Destination · Paris

booking essential

Septime cooks a surprise menu that changes by the day and leans hard on vegetables, and it holds one MICHELIN Star and a MICHELIN Green Star in the 2026 guide.

Arpège★★★

Destination · Paris

booking essential

Alain Passard took meat, fish, dairy and eggs off his menu in July 2025, keeping only the honey from his own hives, and no three-star restaurant in France had done that before.

Bistrot des Tournelles

Solid · French bistro · Paris

booking essential

The mash beside the roast chicken at Bistrot des Tournelles starts with potatoes that Geoffroy Langella bakes first.

Le Clarence★★

Solid · Paris

booking essential

At Le Clarence in January 2026, Andrea Capasso sent Time Out France's critic a lièvre à la royale (hare in the royal style) laid out as a black half-circle with a white dot of horseradish.

Somewhere tonight.

One tap hides everything shut today and everything that needs a booking, then sorts the rest by how close it is to you. I don’t publish opening hours, because they go stale faster than anyone can check them. Check the door before you go.

The nights people ask me about most.

7 questions readers keep putting to me about eating here, answered with the rooms I would send you to and the reason each one fits. Every price and time below comes off the venue’s own page with the date it was read on it, so confirm before you plan a night on one.

It's Sunday in Paris, and Septime, Le Baratin and Le Servan are all shut. Where do I eat?

Book Le Bon Georges in the 9th. It serves lunch and dinner every day. Share the dry-aged entrecôte, which Emily Monaco of The Infatuation called a flavor bomb in May 2023. The beef comes from Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle raised by the butcher Alexandre Polmard. The kitchen cooks it rare or medium-rare and no further. Gilles Pudlowski noticed in December 2024 that Sundays bring the most tourists, so book.

For offal and butter, go to Amarante near Bastille. Paris by Mouth listed it open Friday to Tuesday in 2023. Order the veal sweetbreads with mash and finish on the lemon crème brûlée. Book by text, then arrive at the start of the service, because the house seats people only in its first half hour or so.

For dinner, Bistrot des Tournelles in the Marais opened Tuesday to Sunday in 2022. Order the roast chicken with mash or the beef au poivre. Book about a month ahead. In March 2026 Monaco found the free tables were mostly the last slot of the late service.

The Septime tables went the morning they opened. Where do I go instead?

Walk next door to Clamato, the Septime team's seafood room. It takes no bookings, so turn up early and wait. Order oysters and something sparkling, then the Clamatarte, maple syrup under whipped cream. Plates ran 7 to 29 euros when Le Fooding read the carte. Time Out's critic found the portions small for the money in 2016.

Or ask at Septime's own door during the week you're in town. The Infatuation says people get in that way, because tables come free at the last minute. Bertrand Grébaut, who opened it in 2011, died on 4 July 2026.

For a table you can book in the same part of the 11th, try Le Servan on rue Saint-Maur. Tatiana Levha trained under Alain Passard at Arpège, as Grébaut did. Order her grilled veal sweetbreads under phrik phao, the Thai chili paste. The room seats about forty and fills in waves at each service, so book it.

Which Paris kitchens cost less at lunch, and what does lunch get me?

Book Le Maquis on rue des Cloys for a weekday lunch. The 2026 MICHELIN Guide calls it unbeatable value for money at lunchtime. Time Out put it eighth among the city's classic bistros in March 2025 for a set lunch of knockout dishes with disarming simplicity. It opens Tuesday to Friday, so check before a Saturday.

Le Baratin in Belleville ran a 23-euro weekday lunch menu in December 2025. Mains on Raquel Carena's board ran 25 to 40 euros the same month. Le Fooding calls her calf's brain in lemon butter unsurpassable, so order it. Every wine on the list comes by the glass.

For the grand version, book the weekday lunch at Le Clarence. It cost 150 euros in September 2026, when dinner started at 280. Andrea Capasso kept both MICHELIN stars in the 2026 guide. The house built this lunch to take an hour to an hour and a half.

I want one grand Paris dinner, and the old houses changed chefs in 2025. Which one do I book?

For the classic house cooked the classic way, book L'Ambroisie and bring a budget you don't have to think about. Shintaro Awa took over from Bernard Pacaud in 2025. Meg Zimbeck of Paris by Mouth found the same langoustines with curry, the same roasted lobster with rosemary, the same celebrated chocolate tart in February 2026. The MICHELIN Guide took the third star the next month. You order from the carte, and lunch costs what dinner does. The turbot was 155 euros in November 2025.

For a new chef finding his way, book Le Clarence. Andrea Capasso kept both stars after Christophe Pelé left in 2025. Aitor Alfonso of Time Out France called the lièvre à la royale (hare in the royal style) masterly in January 2026. Gault&Millau was harder that year and found the pollack extremely flat.

For a special night at a gentler price, book Comice in the 16th. Noam Gedalof cooks one set menu to the season. Meg Zimbeck wrote in June 2024 that the room stands out for Etheliya Hananova's wine pairings. Four courses cost 120 euros in September 2025.

Which Paris bakeries are worth a morning, and which days are they open?

Start at Du Pain et des Idées on rue Yves Toudic on a weekday, because it shuts at the weekend. Buy the pistachio and chocolate-chip escargot and a chunk of the pain des amis, the smoky country loaf. The Infatuation warns: one whiff, and it'll be impossible to come away without a chunk of it. The coffee is from Coutume, a Paris roaster.

Then go to Boulangerie Utopie on rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud for the baguette de tradition that won the city's 2024 Grand Prix. Add the sesame éclair, nutty and only just sweet.

For lunch, Chez Aline on rue de la Roquette fills baguettes on weekdays only. Emily Monaco's favorite in 2023 was Prince de Paris ham under a thick layer of butter. Add a slice of the Spanish tortilla.

Where did the chefs of Septime and Le Servan tell people to eat?

Go to Le Baratin in Belleville. Bertrand Grébaut of Septime called it the best restaurant in the world in 2015. Time Out reports that Pierre Hermé comes in at least every two weeks. Book, and bring people who will swap plates.

Book Bistrot des Tournelles for the steak au poivre. Grébaut recommended it for that and for its Beaujolais natural wines in 2024. The chef Jessica Yang called it our favorite traditional French spot. The best fries in Paris in 2024.

For lunch, Grébaut and Tatiana Levha of Le Servan both sent people to Chez Aline. Grébaut said in 2015 that its Spanish tortilla tasted better than any other I've ever had. Levha picked its chicken pot-au-feu sandwich in 2019. Both dishes were still on the menu in 2023 under Tiphaine Moindrot, who took over from Delphine Zampetti in 2022.

Paris pours a lot of natural wine. Where do I drink it with food?

Start at Le Baratin, where Philippe Pinoteau, known as Pinuche, keeps about twenty bottles open. Time Out counts him among the people who started natural wine in France. Every bottle on his list comes by the glass.

At Les Arlots there is no list to read. Tristan Renoux keeps about two hundred and fifty bottles on the shelves, so ask him. Drink it with Thomas Brachet's sausage and mash.

For a cheaper glass, stand at Le Baron Rouge by the Marché d'Aligre. Regulars have their own bottles filled from the casks by the door. David Lebovitz wrote in 2009 that the barrel wines vary in quality from 'pretty-good' to 'what do we do with the rest of the bottle?' Ask what to pour. At weekends a man shucks oysters on the pavement outside. The bar shuts before dinner.
