VEGA
Since March 2026 its eight classic cocktails come in three strengths, full, low and zero, at GBP 11, 9 and 7, built so all three look and taste as close to the same as the team could get them (SLTN).
Why go
That menu is the reason to write about a hotel bar. The concept came from mixologists Johnny Morrison and John Russell with the VEGA team, and the naming is unserious in a way the technique is not: the Aperol Spritz is joined by a Half-It-All and an Aff-It-All, the Daiquiri by a Sly'quiri and a Dry'quiri, the Rhubarb Negroni by a Lo'groni and a No'groni. Russell, the food and beverage manager, describes the actual problem as holding flavor constant while the alcohol comes out: experimenting with techniques and carefully sourcing the best alcohol-free mixers so every version still hits exactly the way it should.
The room itself sits on the top floor of YOTEL with the skyline through the windows, four neon bowling lanes, and since August 2025 a 13-seater U-shaped bar you can book whole with a themed menu, one of the four options being a prohibition-era set (What's On Glasgow).
Order this / avoid
- Order: whichever strength of the Rhubarb Negroni suits the evening, since that is the trio where a low-ABV version has the most to prove. Then the VEGA Special Fish Supper, which is the menu's Glasgow nod, or the katsu curry, which the venue calls its long-running favorite. Banana Katsu for dessert. Book a lane if there are more than two of you, or the whole U-Bar if there are up to 13.
- Avoid: a late dinner. Food stops at 9.30pm while the bar goes to midnight. And take the 2025 refurbishment write-ups for what they are, since both outlets printed the venue's own release.
What locals & experts say
- John Russell, food and beverage manager, in SLTN (30 March 2026):
The key for us was making sure there was literally no change to the taste... No matter the occasion, you can still have a proper, beautifully made cocktail... just without the hangover.
SLTN describes the concept as coming frommulti-award-winning mixologists Johnny Morrison and John Russell
, though it names no award, body or year.1 - Neil Taylor, general manager at YOTEL Glasgow, on the March 2026 menu:
This menu is all about choice, flavour and inclusivity, but more than that, it's about recognising how people's habits are changing and making sure our offering evolves with them.
1 - The U-Bar, from the refurbishment announcement: four packages,
Sky High Classics
,Bootleggers
,VEGA Disco
, andU
, the last being one wherebartenders reimagine two drinks guests love and two they loathe
. Fridays bring U-Bar Takeovers, a four-cocktail menu curated by a different bartender.2 - No critic has reviewed it and no bar award was found. All the coverage located is trade press or the venue's own release, which is why nothing here vouches for how the drinks taste.
- Food hygiene: Pass, inspected 7 May 2026, registered as
Yotel / Vega
5.
Good to know
- Timing: weekdays 7am to midnight, weekends 8am to midnight. Food from noon daily, last food orders 9.30pm.
- Booking: recommended, and necessary for a bowling lane or the U-Bar. There is a GBP 2 weekly bowling special, plus weekly live music and weekend disco brunches, so check what is on before booking a quiet drink.
- Getting there: top floor of YOTEL Glasgow, 260 Argyle Street, a couple of minutes from Central Station and on the same street as the Hielanman's Umbrella.
Craft signals (cocktails: a dated menu launch)
The cadence evidence here is a documented launch rather than a rotation claim. The No, Lo and Go menu went live on 26 March 2026, eight classics rebuilt in three strengths with matched look and taste, credited to named mixologists and explained on the record by the food and beverage manager6. Set against the venue's own menu archive, that is a bar shipping a new programme rather than reprinting one, which is what the cocktail category counts as evolution.
Verdict
could-visit — The top floor of YOTEL on Argyle Street, with Glasgow's skyline through the glass and Scotland's only four-lane bowling alley in a hotel. Since March 2026 the interesting part has been the drinks list: eight classics built in three strengths, full, low and zero, at GBP 11, 9 and 7, engineered by Johnny Morrison and John Russell so the three versions look and taste as close to identical as they could get them. That is a real technical brief rather than a token mocktail section, and the 13-seater U-Bar can be booked whole with a themed menu. No critic has ever assessed the place and most of its coverage is its own press release, so it stays at could-visit: good for a group, a date or a designated driver who still wants a proper drink.
